In what appears to be a preview of January 2027, Democrats have repeatedly found themselves in the House majority as many Republicans have stopped showing up for work.
Since the Republicans only have a slim majority, when people show up on the floor, it means that the Democrats find themselves in the unprecedented position of being the minority party but holding the majority of votes.

This circumstance does not mean that Hakeem Jeffries becomes temporary president; Mike Johnson still retains the gavel, but that has forced him to cancel votes, scramble and be defeated on an Iran war powers resolution that would end Trump’s war in the Middle East.

In recent weeks, due to resignations and deaths, Republicans had 217 members, with an independent representative from California, Kevin Kiley, speaking with them, while Democrats had 212 seats.
A review of the 40 or so House votes held since May 20 shows an alarming number of cases where GOP absentees left the House under unusual circumstances:

It’s one thing to have a small majority, but it’s another to not have a majority.
