Congressional Republicans returned to the Capitol on Monday, and CNN’s Manu Raju sought them out to ask if they had evidence to support Trump’s claim that the California primary election was rigged.
When Raju asked the Speaker, Mike Johnson said:
Me, look, I don’t know… Some of these efforts are so evil and so far upstream that it’s impossible to prove, but I think everyone instinctively knows that something is wrong here, and that’s a concern. We need people to believe in the integrity of our electoral system. It is essential to maintain a constitutional republic. We will continue to work to pass the Save America Act because it requires, as you know, proof of citizenship and a photo ID to vote.
It also accounts for more than 90% of public opinion issues, and 70% of Democrats understand it’s necessary. We must have free and fair elections.
Johnson seemed to claim that there was no evidence that California’s primary election was rigged because that state’s Democrats were “evil.”
It seems Republicans are saying they don’t need proof to say an election was rigged.
In case you’re not clear, House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) wasn’t as subtle as Johnson.
CNN’s Manu Raju asked Scalise during his weekly press conference: “The president keeps saying the California election was rigged. What evidence have you seen that there was widespread fraud that caused this election to be stolen, according to the president?”
