Somehow, the Trump White House convinced itself that it could pressure Democrats to do what they wanted regarding the government shutdown by massively laying off more federal workers.

Let’s put aside for a moment that Democrats have already told the White House that the layoffs don’t matter to them because Trump is likely to carry out his plan whether the government is open or closed.
A government shutdown does not give the executive branch additional power to lay off federal employees.
Since Republicans insist on continuing the government shutdown while refusing to prevent a skyrocketing rise in health insurance premiums at the start of the year, they find themselves faced with schemes and schemes that make no sense.
It is the Republicans who are hurting themselves, not the Democrats, by massively firing federal employees.
The worst part is that this project immediately backfired.
