The White House was outraged that Gavin Newsom closed part of I-5 after the Trump administration planned to fire live ammunition on it as part of a celebration at Camp Pendleton.

Before the event, Newsom released a statement announcing the closure:

California celebrates the history and achievements of our men and women in uniform, as well as this state’s enormous contributions to the defense of democracy. But the increasing numbers of LIVE AMMUNITION fired today on a major highway pose a risk to public safety. Due to extreme life safety risks and driver distraction, including sudden, unexpected and loud explosions, a section of I-5 will be closed for a period on Saturday, October 18.

This decision follows the recommendation of traffic safety experts at the California Highway Patrol. Due to the Trump Administration’s plans, drivers should expect delays on Interstate 5 and other state highways in Southern California before, during and after the event.

It was common sense to everyone except Donald Trump and JD Vance that shooting live ammunition on a busy highway that 80,000 people use every day posed a risk to public safety.
