Ultium cells, a joint venture between General Motors And LG Energy Solution said on Monday that it improved its installation in Spring Hill, Tennessee, to manufacture low -cost electric vehicle battery cells.
GM said that lithium iron phosphate battery cells – the abridged LFP according to the chemical symbols of the elements – could be considerably cheaper than the batteries used in certain electric vehicles, in part because they do not require expensive minerals such as cobalt and nickel used in standard lithium -ion batteries.
“This upgrade to Spring Hill will allow us to set up the production of LFP cell technologies at a lower cost in the United States, completing our rich nickel and future solutions to the Manganese lithium and more diversifying our increasing EV portfolio,” said Kurt Kelty, vice-president of batteries, propulsion and durability to GM, in a press release.
GM has 12 electric vehicles in its range, covering a price range of approximately $ 35,000 at more than $ 300,000.
Detroit’s automaker has teamed up with LG to invest $ 2.3 billion in the Tennessee battery factory when it was announced in 2021. The companies said on Monday’s announcement on Monday was based on the company of persons, but has not disclosed any additional amount for upgrading.
Ultium said it expects the commercial production of LFP cells to start at the end of 2027.
The announcement comes as GM has worked on a separate type of new battery technology for its larger SUVs and electric trucks. Different EV battery chemies have an impact, among others, among others, among others.
GM also said on Monday that he had invested $ 900 million for new battery development laboratories in Michigan.
The same year as GM and LG announced their investment in Tennessee, the CEO of GM, Mary Barra, said that GM would exclusively offer electric vehicles by 2035. At the time, it said that the company would invest $ 35 billion between 2020 and 2025 on the effort, but GM had since declared that customers’ demand – EV, and that he had not revealed his Total EV investment therefore.
