Myanmar soldiers on a sweeping in a central village known for its support for anti-Junta forces killed 11 civilians, most of them too old to flee, residents of the region who saw the bodies at Radio Free Asia on Monday.

The Myanmar army has had a terrible record for human rights for decades in its wars against the minority ethnic guerrillas in remote border regions, independent investigators said.

But violence in the past two years has been particularly brutal in the central areas dominated by members of the majority community of Barmar who, since a popular government has been overthrown in a coup in 2021, have increased for the first time in opposition to the military regime.

All those who are killed in the village of Myay Sun Taw in the Magway region were elderly people apart from two, residents said.

“My father was left behind and did not escape the village. He is elderly, so he is attached to his home and has not fled. We exhorted and called it but he did not follow us, “said the son of one of the victims.

“As far as I know, he was shot in the head. I feel devastated. It was my village, my people and my parents, ”said the son, who refused to be identified for security reasons.

Soldiers from the 101st seat of the Infantry Division and three other battalions were involved in sweeping in the region that started on March 2, the villagers said.

There was no battle to explain the actions of the soldiers when they made a descent into the village, although the region is known to support pro-democracy fighters in the militias called the defense forces of people who have emerged across the country since the coup, in particular in downtown and the regions of Sagain, the residents said.

“They were only civilians,” said a witness to the consequences of the raid.

RFA called the Junta spokesman, Major-General Zaw Min Tun, to ask questions about the incident, but he did not answer at the time of publication.

The soldiers also burned near the Thar Gaung and Za Yat Ni villages, destroying around 600 houses and forcing some 10,000 people to flee.

“The soldiers have launched many offensives in this region. Most villages carry out actions with armed groups to protect themselves, “said a representative of the Information Committee of the Anti-Junta Yesagyo canton, who also refused to be identified in the fear of reprisals.

“People killed in Myay Sun Taw were elderly and innocent people. The army is malicious and extremely cruel. »»
