Democrats win big and don’t care about Mike Johnson on ICE

Because Republicans in the House refuse to do anything, Speaker Mike Johnson has created a huge problem for himself and his party.

The Senate’s deal to pass four of five government funding bills but leave the Department of Homeland Security out, while only giving DHS a two-week CR, created a problem for Johnson.

Because the Senate changed the process after the House passed DHS funding, the two-week CR must return to the House.

Since votes on the rules have become political mines for House Republican leaders, Johnson must find a way to pass the DHS continuing resolution without giving members of his own conference an opportunity to destroy it.

House Republicans are in communications trying to figure out what to do.

Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman posted on X:

House Republicans are in communication right now.

All leaders said members had to show up in Washington because of the tight margins. The margins are only getting tighter. Five of the six spending bills return to the House unchanged, Johnson said. (These were bipartisan, bicameral agreements, so it was expected). JOHNSON also said he hopes to pass the five CR/DHS bills on Monday.

There is just one minor problem. Johnson does not have the votes to pass them himself.
