TAIPIEI, TAIWAN – The United States has imposed export restrictions on NVIDIA H20 fleas in China, tightening its focus on the advanced trade in IA technology with Beijing as part of Washington’s strategy to put pressure on China in the middle of an in progress price battle.
Nvidia, a world leader in the development of AI fleas, said on Tuesday that it was informed by the United States government on April 9 that the export of its H20 fleas to China would now require government approval. He said separately that the restriction would remain in place indefinitely.
Although the H20 chip has a relatively modest calculation power, it has other features that make it suitable for the construction of high -performance computer systems.
The US government would have based its decision on concerns that H20 fleas could be used or adapted to Chinese supercomputers.
Until now, the H20 has been the most legally exportable artificial intelligence chip towards China, which has already faced US national security borders on high-end semiconductor sales. Although its performance is lower than the last NVIDIA Blackwell chip, it is equipped with a wide -band memory similar to that used in Blackwell, which gives it an increase in performance in certain tasks.
The H20 flea drew attention after its use by Deepseek, a Chinese AI startup, which, in January, unveiled a profitable and competitive AI model formed using the chip.
Earlier this year, Tech Media Out is released, the information indicated that large Chinese technological companies, including Alibaba, Tencent and Bytedance, collectively spent more than $ 16 billion in H20 CHIP commands in the first quarter – an increase of more than 40% compared to the previous quarter.
Following new export restrictions, NVIDIA plans to undergo a loss of around 5.5 billion dollars in the first quarter of its exercise.
The United States has for the first time imposed on AI china chip export controls in October 2022 and have since expanded the range of restrictions to cover technologies and additional countries.
The export restriction on the H20 fleas occurs while American-Chinese trade tensions are intensifying. It is also despite NVIDIA’s announcement on Monday that it plans to work with its partners to invest up to up to $ 500 billion over the next four years to build an IA infrastructure, including superordinators manufactured in the United States
Trump has imposed high prices on Chinese imports, many of which are now faced with a total of 145% in additional samples.
More recently, the Trump administration has expanded exemptions for certain products – including smartphones and laptops – excluding them from a world right of 10% and the 125% new levy targeting Chinese technology goods.
Tuesday, Trump targeted even more on Beijing, displaying on its social platform Truth according to which China had failed to comply with the commitments under a previous trade agreement which temporarily interrupted the tariff war during its first mandate of 2016-2020.
He said Beijing only bought “part of what they agreed to buy” and criticized the previous administration of Biden for showing “zero respect” in the application of trade.
In the same position, Trump said that American farmers were often “put on the front line with our opponents, like China”, during commercial conflicts – promising continuous support for American agriculture.
Later in the day, Trump turned his goal to a major aerospace agreement, saying that China had decreased from a previously initiated agreement with Boeing.
“They just denied the Big Boeing, saying that they” will not take possession “of fully committed planes,” he wrote.
Bloomberg pointed out earlier that the Chinese authorities had asked national airlines to stop taking Boeing Jets deliveries and suspending purchases of equipment and parts related to American supplier aircraft.
In retaliation against American actions, China has introduced counterattack targeting American agriculture and imposed a 125% levy for other American imports.
