Starbucks Will install 1,100 company employees and will not fulfill several hundred other open positions, said CEO of the coffee chain, Brian Niccol on Monday.
The cuts will not affect workers in the company’s cafes.
In a message to company employees, Niccol said that Starbucks “simplifies our structure, removes layers and duplication and creates smaller and more agile teams.
“Our intention is to function more effectively, to increase responsibility, to reduce complexity and to stimulate better integration,” wrote Niccol. “All in order to be more concentrated and capable of generating a greater impact on our priorities.”
The layoffs come as Starbucks try to bring the coffee drinkers back to his cafes after sales with comparable stores refused four consecutive quarters. While customers turn to cheaper rivals on the two biggest Starbucks markets, the United States and China, Niccol has tried to reorganize operations since he took the lead in the year last, including by accelerating the service.
Starbucks had around 16,000 employees working outside last year’s stores. The cuts will affect people who work in the support of the company, but not roasting, manufacturing, storage and distribution.
