The Republicans’ cynical approach to election results is on full display in Virginia.
After voters supported redrawing the state’s congressional map to counter Donald Trump’s efforts to rig the 2026 midterm elections, Republicans immediately went court shopping and found a conservative judge in the state who threw out the election and refused to certify the results.
Virginia AG Jay Jones vowed to appeal the decision: “My office will immediately appeal to the Court of Appeals. As I said last night, the voters of Virginia have spoken and an activist judge should not have a veto over the people’s vote. We look forward to defending the outcome of last night’s election in court.”
It is a dangerous and terrible game for democracy when a party tries to invalidate elections and the will of voters.
The Republican Party under Trump invalidates any election it loses.
While conservative media are reeling from the decision blocking redistricting, there appears to be little, if any, concern among Democrats who expect the state Supreme Court to enforce the will of voters.
The case is also expected to be resolved relatively quickly. Republicans can’t drag this out for months and run out of time for the midterm elections.
What stands out is that Republicans’ contempt for democracy when they lose seems limitless.
