As prices royal the American economy, Walmart Can find security in a new part of his business which stimulates more trafficking in stores and online sales: his membership program, Walmart +.

Customers who belong to the subscription-based service have represented nearly 50% of spending on the website and the Walmart application in the United States in the last full financial year, which ended at the end of January, the company told CNBC. On average, Walmart + members buy twice as much and spend almost three times more than Walmart customers who are not subscribed.

The gains of the membership program are useful for Walmart. The large -scale retailer disappointed Wall Street with his prospects For the coming year even before President Donald Trump announces prices on goods from around the world, causing reprisals and fears of a global recession.

As the largest grocer in the United States, the discounter has advantages in an economic slowdown. Despite this, Walmart + could help isolate it from pricing, not only because it is a new source of income, but also because it contributes to loyalty.

In an interview with CNBC, chief growth director Seth Dallaire described the program as a “frequency driver”. He said Walmart has increased by subscriber and strong growth in registration via Walmart + Assist, a program that allows customers that are eligible for the government to half pay the price of membership.

He added that Walmart + Grows, higher profits will allow Walmart to maintain low grocery prices and invest in other areas to make it more competitive. The company can also use customer information to run for advertisers – another growing company with high margin for Walmart – and inform the choices of the products it puts on the shelves.

Walmart should give an update on its retail business and other alternative sources of income, such as the membership and advertising program, Tuesday and Wednesday during an investor event in Dallas. The company, often considered a barometer of consumer health in the United States, could also comment on the state of the American economy.

Walmart + leads to the boom in electronic commerce

Walmart +, which launched almost five years ago, has become a loyalty game and one of the reasons why Walmart was able to increase the profits faster than sales. It offers advantages, including free delivery, free grocery deliveries for $ 35 or more orders, gas discounts and a paramount +subscription.

The membership program was Walmart’s response to Amazon Prime. This is just another page that the retailer took Amazon’s playbook, which passed Walmart in income for the first time in the fourth quarter.

Later this month, Walmart will seek to rely on the loyalty of the members using another tool deployed by Amazon. From April 28, he will launch Walmart + Week, a special event with deeper offers on the existing advantages of the program such as gas discounts and free Burger King sandwiches.

Walmart +, which costs $ 98 per year or $ 12.95 per month, also partly explains why the discounter’s electronic commerce activity exploded. Walmart displayed 11 quarters of a romance of online sales gains in two figures in the United States, with a growth of 20% in the last quarter.

Walmart did not disclose the number of Walmart +subscribers. The market researcher Consumer Intelligence Research Partners estimates that the program had around 25 million members at the end of January, according to estimates based on quarterly consumers and industry research. This is more than double its estimate of around 11 to 11.5 million in the fall of 2022.

Walmart + has much less scope than premium. Amazon’s subscription service, which made its debut in 2005, has around 190 million members in the United States. Almost three -quarters of Amazon customers said they had a main membership, according to CIRP surveys, against 43% of Walmart.com buyers who said they had a Walmart +subscription.

Walmart + always wins more customers. Three years ago, only 23% of Walmart.com buyers said they had a Walmart +subscription.

Trump’s prices are looming

The Walmart investors event this week will coincide with the expected start of steep prices on world countries China, Vietnam and Cambodia. The prices should start on Wednesday, after 10% samples entered into force on Saturday.

Walmart gave its forecasts for the whole year in February, before the expansion of Trump’s price. At the end of February, the discounter said that it expects annual net sales to increase from 3% to 4% and that the adjusted operating profit increases between 3.5% and 5.5% in constant currencies. This includes a wind from a face of 1.5 percentage points of the acquisition of the intelligent television company Vizio and the realization of a year of jump in 2024. The company declared in February that it expects that the profit adjusted in year full of $ 2.50 to $ 2.60 per share includes a wind of 5 cents per share.

The climbing of world commercial conflicts has feared that a recession is looming. And consumers did not feel big even before Trump announces the new functions: consumers’ feeling fell in March at its lowest level since 2022, according to the Survey of the University of Michigan.

While retailers are preparing for the impact of prices, Walmart “is not immune”, but should be better positioned, said Seth Sigman, detailed analyst at Barclays. As the largest grocer in the country, his business is more stable, even if buyers are retreating other types of spending, he said. As a giant business, it has greater capacity to push suppliers to share higher costs and absorb some. And as a well-known value retailer, he can earn sales if buyers with higher and medium income are looking for lower prices, he said.

In addition, he added, new money manufacturers such as membership have brought greater profitability and “a more sticky client”.
