The Minister of Foreign Affairs of China and Japan-South is a complex partnership-the diplomat

In the midst of a tumultuous international situation, the foreign ministers of China, Japan and South Korea gathered in Tokyo for the 11th trilateral meeting of foreign ministers March 22. It was in particular the first meeting of the ministers of the three nations since 2023.

US President Donald Trump upsets long -standing alliances, which could open the way to China to establish deeper ties with nations that have historically supported Washington – including American allies close to Japan and South Korea.

In Tokyo, the best diplomats from the three countries discussed the importance of trilateral cooperation, especially in the middle of the geopolitical flow. While the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan Iwaya Takeshi, the host of Reunion, China, Japan and South Korea share “an influence and significant responsibilities for the peace and prosperity of the region and the international community”, which means that “the improvement of exchanges and cooperation towards the future is of great importance”.

Faced with the high dependence of the Trump administration at the prices, which will hardly attract the dependent economies of the export of China, Japan and South Korea, the three countries have paid particular attention to their economic cooperation. “We have agreed to advance regional economic integration, including the resumption of the free trade agreement [FTA] negotiations, ”said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who urged better communication and better confidence between the three countries. He highlighted That China-Japanese of the South Trilateral southern has “the greatest development potential in East Asia”.

Wang has favored the strengthening of commercial cooperation between the three nations and the early recovery of negotiations to conclude an ALE for a long time between China, Japan and South Korea. He also put pressure for the creation of a trilateral mechanism to discuss export controls, a particularly worrying area for China while the United States seeks to cut its access to advanced technology.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, Cho Tae-Yul, underlined how urgent it is to deal with the belligerent position of North Korea, in particular the role of Pyongyang in the aid to Russia during the conflict in Ukraine. Similarly, Iwaya “expressed his concern about nuclear and missile activities in North Korea, cryptocurrency flights and the progress of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea”. He stressed that the denuclearization of North Korea “is the common objective of the three countries”.

In particular, Wang avoided any mention of North Korea or the Russian-Ukraine war in its comments. Beijing has close relations with Pyongyang and Moscow.

In addition to the difficulties posed by North Korea, the complex network of world alliances served as a backdrop for these talks, in particular given the current tensions in China-US relations. Japan and South Korea, two of the nearest allies in the United States, are wary of the considerable regional influence of China. Adding fuel to Tokyo’s mistrust, the same day, Wang arrived in Japan for talks, the Chinese Coast Guard started a record foray into In the territorial waters of the disputed islands of Senkaku / Diaoyu in the Sea of East China, which are administered by Japan but claimed by China.

The objective of the meeting of foreign ministers was to provide a new political dynamic and an orientation for trilateral collaboration, as well as to organize and coordinate the entire process of trilateral cooperation this year – including a summit of planned leaders. In the midst of current international political and economic disorders, China, Japan and South Korea, the three best economies in East Asia and important players in world trade, send a clear message by working together to maintain multilateralism and the international trade system.

However, this trilateral partnership remains spoiled by tensions between China and Japan as well as between Japan and South Korea. There are territorial disputes between Japan and China and South Korea: the dispute from the Senkaku / Diaoyu Islands between China and Japan, and the Disput of the Dokdo / Takeshima islands between Japan and South Korea. Recently, a dispute of length of length concerning the division of maritime rights in waters between China and South Korea also broke out.

On the geopolitical front, Japan and South Korea are key allies of the United States, which has military bases in both countries. China, however, considers this American presence as a challenge to its influence in the region and a factor in balancing power. The United States has stimulated joint military exercises with South Korea and Japan while tensions with China increase.

However, there are paths available for increased cooperation. With the accent increasingly on climate change and sustainable development, it is possible for more in -depth collaboration on green energy, management of disaster risks and environmental conservation. The three countries could also invest in cross -border infrastructure projects, such as high -speed rail links, maritime routes and plane trips. Improving transport and logistics networks could facilitate trade and travel, improving regional integration. In addition, promoting cultural understanding through educational exchanges, tourism and cultural programs can help promote better relations between the three countries. These exchanges could strengthen mutual trust and cooperation, especially among the young generations who may not carry the same historical grievances.

China, Japan and South Korea have the opportunity to put aside their past grievances and their current difficulties. But for the trilateral partnership to succeed in the foreseeable future, the three nations must also repair their bilateral relations. Relations will progress more if China facilitates South Korean and Japanese officials to visit Beijing and improves the economic environment of multinational societies.

Due to historical concerns, territorial disputes and geopolitical rivalries, Southern Japanese China-Kappine is faced with many obstacles, but it also has many chances of collaboration, in particular in the fields of regional security and economic integration. The future of East Asia will continue to be considerably shaped by the trilateral relationship as regional and global factors change. Continuous discussions such as the meeting of foreign ministers can revitalize the trilateral partnership and offer the three nations opportunities to benefit from cooperation.
