While ranting and raving about House Republicans at the now-empty Kennedy Center For over an hour, Trump said: “I’m not going to say cancel the election, they should cancel the election because the fake news will say ‘he wants the election overturned. He’s a dictator.'” People always call me a dictator.
Trump says these things because it sparks a rise in the left, and it scares them because some people will think, because there’s always a clickbait website that will run with Trump’s threat to generate fear and clicks, that he might actually overturn the election.
Spoiler alert: Elections are organized and administered at the state and local level. The federal government has no power or authority over elections. The federal government does not have a mechanism to stop an election.
When Trump attempted to change the administration of elections through an executive order, that executive order was struck down by the courts. States are not obligated to listen to what Trump says about the election, and they don’t.
Trump later showed his hand in the same rant by imploring Republicans to retain the House.

The president said, “You have to win the midterm elections. Because if we don’t win the midterm elections, it will just be, I mean, they will find a reason to impeach me. I will be impeached.”
Democrats have shown that they are much more interested right now in impeaching members of the Trump administration, because they already know that they will not have the votes to convict and remove Trump in a Senate trial, but they could use impeachment to force some of the worst people out of the Trump administration.
Trump must be taken seriously, even if he cannot prevent the midterm elections.
