A conservative majority court’s federal ruling that Trump’s Texas gerrymander map is illegal and cannot be used in the 2026 election revealed that Trump’s gerrymander war could end up costing Republicans House seats in 2026.
The gerrymander war that Trump unleashed in an effort to rig the Republican majority in the House of Representatives in 2026 had already hit rough seas before the Texas decision.
Republicans in the Indiana Senate announced they do not have the votes needed to redraw the state’s congressional maps. This development sent Trump angry with Indiana State Senate Republicans, where he threatens to give the primary to any Senate Republican who does not vote for a new map.

In red Utah, Trump’s party lost in courtand Democrats will gain a seat in the House of Representatives in Salt Lake City. In Kansas, Republicans in that state’s Senate announced on election night that they did not have the votes to draw the congressional maps, so a gerrymander would not occur in Kansas.
Trump picked up new seats in North Carolina and Missouri. North Carolina’s gerrymander is also being challenged in court.
The decision on the Texas maps does not impact the new California map.
Paul Mitchell, the man responsible for redrawing the map of California, posted on X:
No, this does not cancel #Prop50. The triggering language was removed during the legislative process because it was clear that Texas was in the process of redistricting. So even if their card is invalidated/postponed, the Prop 50 cards remain in place.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) went online after the ruling to talk about Texas’ decision and what it means.
Crockett said:
You all know we had all this drama around our lines because Trump decided he wanted to start in Texas. He wanted to come and take seats in Texas, right? And specifically, he wanted to reduce the voting power and voting strength of black and brown votes in Texas.
RIGHT? So there you go. I was involved in litigation. Since the last lines, because the current lines we have are bad, but the new lines were even worse. So there you go. He says, yo, Abbott, come for your boy. RIGHT? In the end, Abbott, of course, said, “I’ll do whatever you want me to do.” All right?
Now they got themselves into trouble because after they started this, we know Gavin Newsom said, oh, y’all want to play? We can play. So California did what it did.
