Eastman KodakThe latest product launch – a range of digital toy cameras inspired by the 1980s called “Kodak Charming” – seems to have struck a nostalgic agreement with consumers.

The sophisticated cameras of the size of a palm, published Tuesday in collaboration with the Reto cameras company, are already sold on the Kodak website and are only available pre-order in most affiliated retailers.

Weighing 30 grams and measuring 2.2 inches in diameter, the camera is marketed as a functional fashion accessory and is presented in seven styles, each with filters that imitate the appearance of vintage cinematographic photography.

The cameras are sold in blind packaging, which means that buyers will not know what style they get before they bought one. They can take a bet and buy a single camera for $ 29.99, or get all colors for $ 179.94.

But a banner on the Kodak website said due to the high demand from the cameras, “Dispatch will be delayed from 1 to 10 working days”. He added that some regions could see an error saying that shipping is not available when they leave to check because they are out of stock.

Sales come as Kodak, a pioneer from the photography industry, fought.

The Kodak’s second trimester report, published in August, warned that its finances “raise substantial doubt” in its ability to continue operations. The company posted a net loss of $ 26 million, down 200% compared to a net profit of 26 million dollars for the second quarter of 2024, as well as a 12% drop in gross profit with millions of debt bonds.

The company declared at the time that it had a plan to end its pension plan to collect funds and noted that the “disclosure of concerns” is a technical relationship required by the accounting rules.

The company’s shares are down more than 9% over a year.

However, the early success of the charm will suggest that Kodak may have exploited the growing appetite of the Z generation for the vintage look of Y2K fashion with film style photography. In May, the Global Wellness Institute called “Analog Wellness”, including predigital technology, as its main trend for 2025.

The charm will integrate squarely into this niche and capitalize on another obsession with generation Z: the purchase of blind boxes.

Kodak’s sales strategy reflects that of Beijing Pop MartWho has seen booming sales motivated by the purchase of Labubus, a monster doll similar to the elf created by the Dutch artist from Hong Kong, Kasing Lung, and other items of toys.
