Donald Trump’s second presidency has several decisive characteristics, including corruption and abuse of power, but the one that is reinforced almost daily is a small vincitude.
Whether the raid on former ambassador John Bolton, who was a frequent critic of Trump’s foreign policy, or surveys on the community of national security and allegations against criticism such as senator Adam Schiff (D-CA), Trump’s second presidency is very similar to a vengeance tour.
Vice-presidents generally receive 6 months of protection of secret services after leaving your duties. At the end of his mandate, Joe Biden extended the protection of Kamala Harris for an additional year.
Trump canceled his protection by issuing a letter Declaring: “You are authorized to interrupt the procedures linked to the security previously authorized by the executive memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, from September 1, 2025: the former vice-president Kamala D. Harris.”
The United States is in an unprecedented period of threats of political violence.
Fox News Published an article earlier this week in the disastrous situation, “political violence increases in America, and it hit the legislators on both sides of the aisle … In 2024, the police of the American Capitol surveyed more than 9,000 threats against the legislators, marking more than 18% compared to the police archives.”
Whether it is the political assassination of the legislators of the state of Minnesota or the attack on the husband of Nancy Pelosi, there was never more dangerous time for elected officials and their families, which makes Trump’s decision to withdraw the protection of the secret services of the former vice-president Harris particularly imprudent.
At a time when legislators of all scratches require more security, Trump removes the security of someone whom he considers as a political enemy.
Trump endangers the life of a former vice-president and his family. Biden prolonged the protection of Harris because it was filled with the rhetoric of Trump and his allies.
Regardless of political affiliation, it is absurd that the former vice-presidents only obtain 6 months of protection after leaving his functions. The old standard may have been good when the threats of violence were not so common, but times and circumstances have changed.
The law must change with it.
Instead of doing more to protect elected officials, Trump does less to protect Harris, and if something incredibly horrible had to happen, Donald Trump will be responsible.
