Walmart Thursday will publish its quarterly results before the bell, while investors and economists assess the strength of the American consumer and the impact of higher prices on the retail industry.
Here is what Wall Street is waiting for the first tax quarter, according to a survey of LSEG analysts:
- Managed by action: 58 cents
- Income: $ 165.88 billion
Walmart has advantages that could help him resist an uncertain economy. As the largest grocer in the country, he sells food and necessities that stimulate more stable stores and websites.
And as a well -known value player, he can use lower prices to attract even medium and higher customers who want to pay less. Already, Walmart has attracted richer buyers with faster deliveries, store renovations and a wider assortment of brands.
In addition, the discounter has increased profits by looking beyond retail companies and in new businesses, including advertising, delivery and the membership program based on Walmart +computer subscription.
During a day of investors last month, Walmart remained by its selling prospects in the first quarter of 3% to 4%. However, it has widened operating income orientations and did not provide a new range, citing uncertainty on the impact of prices on profits.
At the time, the financial director John David Rainey said that the large box retailer had seen “a little more volatility from weekly and frankly day -to -day sales”. He said the company expected to be his strongest month in the quarter due to the Easter holidays.
About a third of what Walmart sells in the United States comes from other parts of the world, with China and Mexico as the “most important” countries for imports, said Rainey in April.
Since the remarks of Walmart's investor day, the Trump administration has increased the prices on goods from China, then announced later that it would reduce these prices for 90 days. On Monday, President Donald Trump announced the agreement with China to temporarily reduce rights to 30%, compared to 145%. Beijing said it would reduce tariffs on American products to 10%, compared to 125%.
Simeon Gutman, detailed analyst at Morgan Stanley, said he expects Walmart and other retailers to capitalize on the 90 -day break by important what they need for the crucial seasons of the start of the school year and the holidays.
As a retail giant and low-cost operator, Walmart is “in an enviable position,” he said. The company's scale allows more effective operations, more leverage in negotiations with suppliers and the ability to maintain low prices – even at a time when consumers are selective on expenses and rate levels increase and lower.
“Whenever these shocks occur in the system, how can they not be the best?” Said Gutman.
But, he added, “at some point that the consumer is more temporary, it is essential for this company to show that he always takes actions.”
Since the fence on Wednesday, Walmart shares have increased by around 7% so far this year. This goes beyond the almost flat performance of the S&P 500 during the same period. Walmart's shares closed $ 96.83 on Wednesday, bringing the company's market value to around $ 775 billion.
