Earlier Thursday, House Democratic Chef Hakeem Jeffries told CNN that he thought the United States has been in a constitutional crisis since January 20.
Celina Stewart, CEO of the League of Women Voters, and Dianna Wynn, president of the League of Women Voters, published a statement on the crisis:
It’s been 87 days since the Trump administration’s start. From the blatant contempt for the authority of the congress and government checks and counterweight to the last action of openly defying the ordinances of the Supreme Court to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia back to him, one thing is clearly clear: our country is in constitutional crisis.
We, people, must fight back. This is why the League of Women Voters is launching a new powerful initiative, Unite and Rise 8.5.
Unite and Rise 8.5 will commit and mobilize 8.5 million voters by November 2026 to protect and preserve our democratic institutions.
The fundamental principles that supported our democracy – checks and counterweights, the rule of law, the free and fair elections – are threatened directly and supported. Right now extraordinary, we cannot continue business as usual. All Americans – it doesn’t matter who you voted in 2024 – must come together, stand united and retaliate to save our democracy. We cannot afford to fail the generations to come.
The purpose of the action is to mobilize 8.5 million voters for the 2026 elections, because the Democrats in the Congress currently have the power to arrest Trump. The courts have still not shown any desire to go in its own right to arrest the president, and the republican party is completely useless.
The movement which prevents Trump comes from the people, and this movement implies a protest and a mass mobilization of the Americans who present themselves in the polls. America is in a constitutional crisis, and the solution to stop Trump will come from the base.
