Pieces of rare memories of two of the largest icons in the National Basketball Association strike the auction block and are expected to sell for $ 20 million combined.

Sotheby announced Thursday that he is auctioning Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant Jerseys who were worn in each of their first NBA matches. The auction comes when recruit memories have experienced a recent increase in popularity and prices.

“The historic weight of these two jerseys is difficult to overestimate. They are also rare as they come,” said Brahm Wachter, the leader of modern collectibles of Sotheby, in a press release.

The jerseys will be available in separate lots from March 21.

Sotheby’s sells rare jerseys of the recruit season of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.

The Jordan jersey was for the first time on October 5, 1984 in Peoria, Illinois, where he played his first match for the Chicago Bulls in front of a crowd of only 2000 people.

The said Sotheby jerseys of Jordan’s recruit season are “unicorns” and rarely seen on the market.

Jordan ended an average of 28.2 points per match this recruit season, which earned him the recruit honors of the year. He won six NBA championships and cemented his name as one of the biggest basketball players.

Sotheby’s expects the emblematic jersey to cost about $ 10 million.

A second batch offers the first Bryant jersey of his Recruit Reason in 1996-1997 with the Los Angeles Lakers. Sotheby’s said that the rare jersey was worn in the first pre-season and regular season games in Bryant.

Bryant entered the NBA at only 18 years old and won five NBA championships and two MVP finals. He died in a tragic helicopter accident in 2020.

The Bryant jersey should also sell in the 10 million dollars range.

Sotheby’s says that memories of recruit have seen a recent increase in demand among its customers. In October 2023, the Jersey of the San Antonio Spurs from Victor Wembanyama sold $ 762,000, and in August 2022, a recruit card from Mickey Mantle of 1952 sold for $ 12.6 million.

“The first recruited jerseys represent the genesis of the career of an athlete. For collectors looking for real unique treasures, it is a unique opportunity to have emblematic pieces in the history of basketball,” said Wachter.
