Republicans hoped that the American people would rally behind the flag, support Donald Trump and his party when he decided to start bombing Iran.
Trump’s war is already more unpopular than Vietnam’s, and now the administration wants tens of billions of dollars in additional funding to cover the cost of the war in Iran.
The White House is even reportedly considering sending ground troops to Iran, an idea that drew sharp criticism from Sen. Chris Murphy on CNN’s State of the Union.

Senator Murphy said:
I mean, this is already a war becoming a permanent disaster. The situation is even worse if the president talks about deploying ground forces, and then talks about dozens, if not hundreds, of new American casualties. I think this administration just can’t figure out how to achieve its goals. Their objectives therefore change from minute to minute. Sometimes we look to change our diet, sometimes we don’t. They have always tried to eliminate Iran’s nuclear program. But what they don’t understand is that you can’t bombard knowledge to make existence disappear. Even if you were to do something extremely dangerous, like send U.S. ground forces to try to extract some of their enriched uranium, there will still be knowledge in Iran, so that if you can’t actually put a new leader in that country, they’ll just be able to rebuild that capability as soon as the U.S. forces are gone.
So it’s a billion dollar waste of money. Every day we pursue goals that the administration cannot actually achieve, including the use of military force to try to destroy the knowledge that already exists in Iran in order to build a nuclear weapon, right?
