Marjorie Taylor Greene may just be the tip of the iceberg. Greene’s abrupt resignation from the House was intentional. She didn’t tell Donald Trump or Mike Johnson in advance because she wanted to further reduce the slim Republican majority in the House.
Republicans already face the prospect of having a governing majority without a vote in the House.. There is a special election in Tennessee for a House seat in a Trump district (+22) that is much closer than expected in early December. Democrats will win special elections in blue districts in Texas and New Jersey in January and April.
By not resigning until January 2026, Greene knew that the election to fill her seat would likely not take place until Georgia’s primary elections in May. The slim majority of three Republicans could disappear before the election for Greene’s seat.
At best, House Republicans will have to try to govern by a one-vote margin until May 2026.
However, things are about to get worse for Mike Johnson and Trump.
House Republicans are tired of being treated like trash by Trump and the President, and a top House Republican sent a text to Jake Sherman explaining how they feel.
Sherman published on X:
This entire White House team treated EVERYONE like trash. ALL. And Mike Johnson let that happen because he wanted to. This is the feeling of almost everyone: those who appropriate, those who authorize, the hawks, the doves, the base. The arrogance of this White House team is discouraging for its members who are mistreated and threatened. They don’t even allow small victories like announcing small grants or even responding to agencies. Even the most prominent members, the random members of the rank and file, are no more upset than ever. The deputies know that they will enter a minority after the mid-term elections.
Then came the bomb. More surprise resignations are coming and Republicans could lose the House.
