The visual broadcast to the world was even more bizarre: Trump, fragile and declining, sat behind his desk in the Oval Office, with Mamdani towering over him like the future looming over a fading and soon-to-be-forgotten past.

Republicans urgently needed something to get their base invested in the 2026 elections. The motivations Republicans use to get their voters to the polls are generally not hopeful and inspiring. Republicans like to scare their voters during elections, traditionally with ideological or cultural monsters.
Democrats are looking for inspiration to vote. Republicans must be terrified that their world is coming to an end if the Republican Party does not win the next election.
It didn’t help that Trump campaigned primarily on the message that if Republicans voted for him, they would never have to vote again. Judging by the results of the 2025 election, Republican voters took Trump at his word as they were defeated coast to coast.
The Mamdani-Trump meeting at the White House was the kind of staged visual that cable news loves.
Since Trump’s decline became evident, the White House’s ability to effectively organize events has deteriorated, but what happened at Mamdani destroyed the Republican Party’s 2026 plans.
