SiriusxmThe audio entertainment company, which has long been known as a free option for radios in the car, bet on advertising to propel its activities.

On Tuesday, the company launched its first subscription plan funded by listening to cars called Siriusxm Play. It is a cheaper option than its longtime offer and will cost less than $ 7 each month for the car and streaming. He offers a limited set of advertisements on a subset of his music, sport, news and Talk-Talk offers, said the company.

Siriusxm seeks to advertise the same way as its media counterparts in the traditional television and streaming space in order to generate income and profits, and to keep customers. While the competition warms up, in particular with other audio options, Siriusxm bets that an option cheaper and supported by advertising will help convert more free trial consumers into a long -term customer.

The option will currently be available on a limited basis, but Siriusxm plans to make the package available to nearly 100 million vehicles by the end of 2025. More details on the plans and packaging prices will be available later this year.

While Siriusxm Play subscribers will initially have access to more than 130 music and conversation channels, additional channels will be added over time, said the company.

The host of Radio Populaire Howard Stern, as well as the live sports game and certain musical channels led by artists will remain exclusive to customers without advertising in the car. Siriusxm offers a variety of advertising packages that are between $ 9.99 and $ 24.98 per month.

While Siriusxm is known for its service in the car, it also offers a streaming application and has Pandora, another musical streaming service, which has its own plans to advertise.

Siriusxm has already identified a key target audience for its level funded by advertising: drivers who recently bought a car and did not renew the Siriusxm service after the expiration of their free trial, CNBC managers said.

Taking into account advertising for activities in Siriusxm’s car “has been there for some time,” said the chief of the Wayne Thorsen farm in an interview.

The company has experienced advertising for Siriusxm and in 2024 began to offer a free version and supported by advertising with limited content to select vehicles. Thorsen has said that this is akin to Spotify free level and is used as a way to win back customers who submit free trials and push them to improved and paid plans.

The new plan funded by advertising launched on Tuesday is a different experience of this Siriusxm experience without advertising and main, and the company does not expect that a majority of its users have repercussions.

“There are a lot of people who do not convert when they are in our test functions. They like the service, then the price arrives,” he said.

The length of the Siriusxm cars varies, the vast majority extending over three months.

“What does that mean [for SiriusXM]? I think the example I would probably use is Netflix. He had a very similar dilemma, “said Thorsen.

For years, Netflix fell to add advertisements to its streaming service.

“They met, at least in the United States, with slow growth. They had to find a way to kiss something that was a little more concerned about prices,” said Thorsen.

Netflix And Siriusxm already have a lot of subscribers, a natural limiter of growth. Netflix, for its part, has stopped reporting its quarterly growth of subscribers to focus on its profitability and other measures. When the company declared losses in 2022, its scholarship course took a hit. Since the introduction of a plan funded by advertising and a repression of password sharing, however, Netflix shares have soaked.

Meanwhile, Siriusxm also faces competitive pressures. Namely, there is the rise of technology that allows consumers to disseminate other services in their cars, such as Spotify And Apple Music. Although the company has had Pandora since 2019, it has concentrated in recent years on the creation of the Siriusxm Streaming application only.

Driving profits

Faced with these challenges, Siriusxm looks at what he has long considered his strength – his position in the car – led by CEO Jennifer Witz.

Months after he was separated from John Malone Liberty Media Empire, Siriusxm, announced in December a strategic plan updated in order to focus on its radio activity in the car and a new emphasis on advertising. He also announced Thorsen as COO and provided investors with new financial objectives.

Siriusxm said that it would move marketing and other resources from what he called the “cost” public in streaming, which is often in and out of the subscription plans “, to concentrate resources on the basic income segments”. Car subscriptions represent 90% of its customers.

“We entered this year with a very clear concentration on what we do best, which is super extensive our main audience segments with our unmatched distribution in the car and our very unique content offer focused on live, exclusive and organized content,” said Witz at a conference on investors in May. “I am convinced that we are on the right track.”

Siriusxm put an end to its first quarter with 33 million subscribers in total, a decrease of 303,000 subscribers during the period. The gross profit for Siriusxm was $ 937 million, down 6% compared to the period of the previous year, with a gross margin of 59%, 1 percentage point below the period of the previous year.

In total, Siriusxm said $ 2.07 billion in quarterly revenue for its last quarter, a drop of 4% compared to the previous year and a net profit of $ 204 million, compared to $ 241 million. The results also include Pandora and other activities outside the platform. The next report on the results of the company occurs on July 31.

Advertising revenues are already playing a role in the company. Siriusxm achieved around $ 1.8 billion in advertising revenue in 2024. In May, he declared $ 394 million in advertising revenue for his last quarter, a drop in the same period of the previous year. This was partially offset by the activity of increasing podcast.

However, the introduction of the subscription plan funded by advertising comes during a weak point for the advertising market.

The advertising market through traditional media has been gentle in recent years, especially due to macroeconomic challenges. This has been amplified this year due to President Donald Trump’s business policies who questioned business spending.

Scott Walker, director of advertising revenue of Siriusxm, described the current advertising environment of “unpredictable”.

“Our company reflected and flows with macroenvironnement, and there have certainly been many companies that have been disrupted by pricing noise, in particular those with supply chains abroad,” said Walker.
