The Varda space startup announced Thursday that it had raised $ 187 million in series C financing, led by the venture capital companies Natural Capital and Shrug Capital, to continue to advance the manufacture of drugs in space.
The last round included the participation of Peter Thiel, Lux Capital, Khosla Ventures and Cafeined Capital. He brought the total capital that Varda raised $ 329 million.
“By operating, we can support work on more complex molecules and finally increase the rate to carry out the recovery times of the pharmaceutical industry,” said director of chief sciences Adrian Radocea on Thursday in a press release.
The main mission of Varda is to launch and return drugs made in space. The startup said that drugs crystallize differently in orbit due to the differences in severity, which would allow it to finish drugs that are currently difficult to manufacture.
In 2024, the Space Startup W-SERIE 1 capsule received approval from the FAA to return after having managed to create the drug ritavir the previous year.
So far, Varda has said that the company has been able to carry out three space launches. Now, a fourth is in orbit, and the company plans to launch a fifth by the end of the year. Varda does all of her parts internally.
“With this capital, Varda will continue to increase our flight rate and build the pharmaceutical laboratory which will offer the first formulation of drugs compatible with microgravity in the world,” said Bruey, CEO of Varda.
Varda Space Industries is the first company to treat materials outside the international space station.
Recently, the space company has also operated a test bench for the US government to use the back -to -school vehicles in the W series to advance technology.
Varda said that he had extended to Huntsville, Alaska, and opened a laboratory in El Segundo, California, to start crystallizing more medicines.
“Our new laboratory space is an investment in our conviction that pharmaceutical manufacturing in space will stimulate the basics of the orbital economy,” said Radocea.
Correction: Varda makes all of her parts internally. A previous version of this story destroyed the system.
