To long, considered the only son of the senior Vietnam leader in Lam, was promoted to a main position at the Ministry of Public Security, online articles showed, in a decision that could be intended to cement the support of the police.

The information and images broadcast on the Tiktok social media platform showed that the colonel had long been appointed director of the Ministry of External Security of the Ministry during a ceremony of June 4.

Experts said that Long promotion is the last in a series of LAM appointments to consolidate power.

Lam’s own climb was “built on the strength of the police forces”, which makes his support crucial because he seeks another mandate as secretary general of the Communist Party, Nguyen Van Dai, an experienced observer in Vietnamese politics, told Radio Free Asia.

State media have not announced the appointment of long.

The Ministry of Public Security often avoids public announcements on promotions and appointments. Previously, Major-General May Hoang was appointed director of the Ho Chi Minh police service without any coverage in the state media.

It is also unusual for the best figures in the Communist Party to disclose information on family members. According to the Vietnamese BBC, local media were invited not to report on developments in order to avoid attracting public attention.

Long, 43 years, maintains a low public profile. After several years of study abroad, he joined the ministry and, in February, was seen attending a meeting of the Ministry of Public Security on peacekeeping operations.

In June 2024, the state media identified him as the deputy head of the Permanent Bureau of the Ministry for the maintenance of the United Nations.

An analyst based in Hanoi said that the authorities were wary of the public discussion of the appointment because many members of the management come from the northern province of Hung Yen, the birthplace of LAM. The analyst asked anonymity to comment on the sensitive subject.

In Lam, who became party leader in August 2024, began his career in public security in 1979 and became the best security official in the country in 2016. Since he assumed power, he stacked the police apparatus with allies and people of Hung Yen.

LAM has raised allies to key safety stations, appointing Luong Tam Quang as Minister of Public Security and Pham Tung at the head of the investigators’ security agency. He also set up new police chiefs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh-Ville, the two largest cities in Vietnam. Several police generals in the Hung Yen province have also been promoted for high positions in the Communist Party.

These appointments become before the National Party Congress in power in January 2026, where the delegates elect a new management team for the next five -year term.
