The Trump administration has attempted to silence dissent in the United States. In many ways, they failed. Two of the largest protests against a president in American history took place during the first year of Donald Trump’s second term.
Trump took over the Kennedy Center and put his name on it, but that was accompanied by waves of artists canceling concerts and showing no interest in performing there.
Beyond Trump, there is also the problem of many artists and performers who turn a blind eye and refuse to say anything, fearing they will alienate a portion of their audience or lose the support of those who support the president.
There is a culture of bullying. Some content creators are afraid of alienating part of their audience and therefore say nothing about politics. It doesn’t matter what the Trump administration does; these people will not speak out because they do not want to get involved in politics.
However, many artists and performers of the highest levels are speaking out.
Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance at a music festival in New Jersey, and he didn’t shy away from addressing the murder of Renee Good.
Springsteen said:
We live in incredibly critical times. The United States and the ideals and values it has defended for 250 years are being tested like never before in modern times.
If you believe in the power of the law and that no one is above it, if you oppose heavily armed federal troops invading an American city using Gestapo tactics against our citizens, if you believe that you do not deserve to be assassinated for exercising your American right to protest, then send a message to this president.
