Lighting the tree usually involves the president standing and talking about how Christmas brings us all together, and some things potentially from a Hallmark Christmas movie or two.
It is a rather light moment which constitutes a new step on the road leading to the end of the political year.
This was all true until the degraded version of Donald Trump came onto the scene.
The same day, Trump told reporters:
I was with a gentleman, the future king of Saudi Arabia, and you heard me say this many times, but two months ago when I was there, he said, uh, and actually Qatar is represented today and you, the UAE, are represented and your leader said exactly the same thing, different words, but exactly the same thing as a year ago, they thought our country was dead.
