Detractors will always call the event a failure and underestimate the size of the crowd.

The No Kings protest has so far followed the usual pattern.
Donald Trump supporters are calling the event a failure, while supporters and protest attendees are anticipating very large numbers in terms of crowd size.
Two groups can provide a decent estimate of crowd size.
Since event organizers must obtain permits, they usually have an idea of the crowd size they expect before an event and can estimate how close they got or whether the crowd exceeded expectations.
The other source is law enforcement.
Some crowd size estimates from some of the previous gatherings are starting to come in, and they are impressive.
The NYPD posted on X that the No Kings protests resulted in no arrests and attracted over 100,000 people:
The majority of the No Kings protesters dispersed at this point and all traffic closures were lifted. More than 100,000 people across the five boroughs peacefully exercised their First Amendment rights, and the NYPD made no arrests related to protests.
