Bangkok, Thailand-Military leaders from Thailand and Cambodia met on Tuesday to agree on the details of a ceasefire, negotiated in the middle of the United States pressure, which arrested five days of fatal skirmishes along their disputed border.

Regional military commanders along the 800-kilometer border agreed to stop the shots, refrain from moving troops and establishing direct bilateral communications, according to a spokesman for the Thai army and a spokesperson for the Cambodian Defense Ministry.

The acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Vejjayachai, Cambodian troops of having violated the ceasefire on Tuesday. The Thai government said it had filed a complaint concerning the alleged violation of Malaysia, the United States and China.

The Minister of Defense of Cambodia, Tea Seiha, denied the complaint, writing on Facebook that the Armed Forces of Cambodia strictly observed the truce. He said the Cambodian Defense Ministry would lead a delegation of foreign diplomats to observe the border.

Local sources near the border told RFA that the gunshots had been heard periodically at the starting hours on Tuesday. A journalist from the Agency France, near the border, said that the noise of the shots had stopped before the midnight deadline, a calm that continued on Tuesday evening.

Thailand Phumtham and Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia appeared on Monday to announce the ceasefire, negotiated with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia, annual president of the Anase Regional Bloc.

The announcement came in the pressure of the American president Donald Trump, who said that the continuation of the fighting could block negotiations for a trade agreement with the United States, the two countries are faced at a 36% rate on their goods unless a reduction can be negotiated. After the announcement of the agreement, Trump said that he had spoken with the two leaders and told his team to restart the talks.

At least 43 people were killed and around 300,000 were moved during the fighting, which included jets, rockets and artillery.

Some residents, such as the Cambodian Soklang Slay, expressed their distrust when they returned home on Tuesday.

“I am very concerned about the fact that new fights can break out. Thailand often causes fights first, but then accuses Cambodia. Their objectives are that they want to occupy our temples [along the border]. I really don’t want to see new fights occur, “he told the Associated Press.

Supalak Ganjanakhundee, author and former editor -in -chief of the national newspaper in Bangkok who lives in his hometown in the district of Kantharalak, province of Sisaket, was among the displaced. He had to evacuate, he said, and lost his cattle and his chance to harvest the fruits of the Mûrs Durian.

“The recent border skirmish between Thailand and Cambodia was insane and did not respond to any of the two advantages. However, he served the interests of the Thai army and the Cambodia management family,” he told RFA, referring to spit between Hun Manet and suspended Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

“Politically, the conflict has placed the government of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on the verge of collapse. The failure of coherent diplomacy opened the door to external interventions – notably by the United States and China – complicating an already volatile situation. ”

To solve their long -term problems, he said that the two countries should accept the presence of international observers to monitor and verify the implementation of the truce.

“At the same time, they have to reactivate the dormant bilateral mechanisms to solve critical border security problems and the demarcation of the borders long expected,” he said.
