A protest in Kathmandu demanding The restoration of King Gyanendra Shah on the throne and declaring Nepal a Hindu state became violent on March 28, 2025. The demonstration left two dead and several injured, in addition to a fire fire fire and large -scale looting, in his wake.

The public outcry chased King Gyanendra from power in 2007. Now, Nepal is attended by a series of demonstrations, in particular in Kathmandu, to bring him back.

Since 2015, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) of Nepal Directed the request that Nepal be declared Hindu State and for the restoration of the monarchy. The Shah dynasty ruled Nepal to 240 years old, starting with its founderKing Prithivi Narayan Shah, who has unified what is now Nepal. He ended with the last King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah.

On June 1, 2001, the Whole family of the deceased king birerandra (Gyanendra’s older brother) was shot dead by his son and the crown prince Dipendra. After shooting all the family members present, Dipendra shot himself and died of injuries three days later.

This has paved the way to Gyanendra Shah, a businessman until then, to set up the throne.

As a constitutional monarch, King Gyanendra exceeded the powers devolved to him And dismissed the Prime Minister elected on February 1, 2005, dissolving the Parliament. It turned out to be the turn of his own future.

The Nepalese political parties and the Maoists, which led an armed insurrection, reached a consensus by the dialogue to abolish the direct rule of King Gyanendra.

THE 2007 people movement overturned the direct rule of Gyanendra and restored parliament. An elected official Constituent Assembly ended the monarchical system and declared Nepal a Federal Democratic Federal Republic on May 28, 2008. The new government, however, decided to allow the old king for the use of one of his palaces (others were taken up) and ensured security.

Mutual understanding between political parties and the former king provided him with a safe and dignified outing.

Two elections were tried to constitute a constituent assembly to write the Constitution. The first failed in the task. The second constituent assembly, however, successfully promulgated a republican constitution in 2015.

The Constitution of Nepal of 2015 is considered a progressive document which addresses the grievances of minorities and provides an inclusive representation framework for marginalized sections such as dalits and women.

Over the years, the government has written laws directly or indirectly linked to the implementation of fundamental rights and to newly imagined institutions at the federal, provincial and local levels to implement constitutional provisions.

However, the government has not met people’s expectations in terms of provision of public services. Case of corruption has increased quickly over the years. These factors have created the conditions for re-emergence of the hitherto dormant royalists who have started to demand the restoration of the monarchy.

The first formal discourse From ex-king on February 18, 2025, on the eve of democracy day, called on the people to support them “to save the nation and maintain national unity”, affirming that democracy had not been able to gain the confidence of citizens.

A big The crowd was formed in Kathmandu to welcome the former king of the airport when he returned there on March 9 of this year of a trip to Pokhara nearby.

The public response encouraged the royalists and the former king to mobilize the people more and to organize pro-royalist demonstrations in Kathmandu.

It was estimated that around 5,000 people attended a demonstration on March 28 demanding the restoration of the monarchy. It became violent and demonstrators attacked the security staff. One of the leaders of the demonstration, Durga Prasai, used his vehicle to break the safety barricadeForce the prohibited areas.

Safety staff used tear gas and rubber bullets against demonstrators. A demonstrator was killed in the dismissal of the police and a journalist trapped inside a house which was burnt down by the demonstrators, also deceased. In addition, 30 demonstrators and 40 security staff were injured.

The royalists set fire to vehicles, looted department stores and attacked public buildings and political parties.

Traditional political parties – the Nepalese Congress, the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist Leninist), the Maoist Center, the Communist Party of Nepal (Socialists) – all have strongly condemned monarchist violence. They want to hold the former king responsible for the demonstration and the violence that followed.

Several Civil society organizations, human rights defenders and business community also condemned violence.

A few Civil society organizations And the members of the public allegedly alleged that the Hindu fundamentalists of neighboring India encouraged the ancient royal and Hindu religious groups to start a movement for the restoration of a Hindu state.

A large group of supporters of the former king, for example, wore a banner with a photo of Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar PradeshIndia. Adityanath is the chief of a temple in Gorakhpur on the Indian-Nepal border, who had a Historical link with the monarchy In Nepal – they were all followers of Guru Gorakhnath, who created the temple and after which the city of Gorakhpur is named.

The rise of fundamentalist Hindu fundamentalist and monarchists in Nepal has contributed to a volatile situation and increased political instability. This could ultimately lead to anarchy in the country and can also have overflow effects in the region.

The threat of harmony among the different religious communities of Nepal can be exacerbated by the rise of religious fundamentalism.

The framework of political parties and the general public are also in a dilemma on religion and its role in politics. The majority of Nepalese are Hindus, and some wonder why it is a problem with the officially declaration of Nepal a Hindu state. The former king and his supporters are aware of such public confusion and try to exploit it.

They know that the acceptance of a Hindu state requires Hindu cultural and religious leadership. And the former king hopes to fill this void once he occurs.

Unload Nepal A Hindu State will however undermine the existing constitution as well as the aspiration of “” “Loktantra(Peoples rule) and live in a harmonious secular state. Maintaining political stability is a prerequisite for prosperity and development.

The Nepalese people have long aspired to peace and progress. They believe that the existing constitution, as well as the recognition of diversity and the devolution of power, can help achieve this objective. Marginalized communities, such as dalits, increase their Voices and opposition to royal demonstrators.

Looking at the largest region of South Asia, Nepal is relatively stable politically in terms of conduct of periodic elections and to have a new progressive constitution. Political instability in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka already poses challenges in terms of people’s security and security.

As for India, it wants to be the greatest economy and regional power. However, these ambitions can be undermined if the forces of India encourage Hindu religious fundamentalists in Nepal.
