When the sun rises on July 4, 2026, it will shine over Guam before reaching any other U.S. soil. Long before fireworks light up the skies over Washington, Philadelphia or Boston, the first American community to salute the nation’s 250th anniversary will be a small island in the Western Pacific, an island that has given the United States more than most Americans will ever imagine.
“Where America’s Day Begins” is not a slogan designed for tourism. It is a reflection of Guam’s place in American history: geographically distant, strategically essential and unwaveringly loyal. As the United States celebrates its half-fiftieth anniversary, Guam will once again find itself at the forefront of national history, and it is time for the rest of the country to recognize what that really means.
For generations, the people of Guam have lived at the forefront of American defense. Our island is located in the heart of the Indo-Pacific region, the region that now shapes global security and economic competition. Guam bases anchor U.S. deterrence, power projection and humanitarian response capabilities across half the world. Our families live daily with the responsibilities and risks that come with this role.
And our service is not abstract. Guam’s sons and daughters have fought and died in every major U.S. conflict since World War II, at a rate well above the national average. Our veterans bear the scars of wars fought thousands of miles away, even as our island remains one of the most strategically targeted places in the world.
Yet despite this extraordinary commitment, Guam too often remains invisible in the national debate. Many Americans are unaware that Guam residents are U.S. citizens. Even fewer people understand the island’s central role in safeguarding national interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
The 250th anniversary of the United States offers a rare opportunity to change that. As the first place in America to host this historic day, Guam can remind the nation and the world that we are not a distant outpost. We are an integral part of the American family, a frontline community whose patriotism is proven and whose strategic value is unmatched.
But recognition must lead to responsibility. If Guam is indispensable to America’s defense posture, then the nation must view Guam as indispensable. This means investing in the civilian infrastructure that protects our families. That means strengthening health care, toughening public services, and ensuring that as the military mission grows, the quality of life of our residents is not left behind. This means recognizing that national security begins with community security.
When the sun rises on July 4, 2026, it will illuminate the first chapter of America’s 250th anniversary and it will shine first on a people who have watched over the nation with loyalty, resilience and quiet courage.
As the country celebrates its past, let it also recognize where its future security begins. Let the celebration begin where America Day begins, on Guam, an island that has always been essential to American history.
