Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are faced with an upheaval of leadership – and at the center of the reshuffle, he is worrying about the agency’s approach to American vaccines and public health.

The White House said Thursday that President Donald Trump had dismissed CDC director Susan Monarez after refusing to resign. Monarez lawyers said it was “targeted” to “protect the public to serve a political program”.

Meanwhile, four other senior CDC health officials announced on Wednesday that they left the agency. This includes Demeter Daskalakis, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, who said that he could no longer be used because of the “armament of public health”.

The former chief physician of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Debra Houry, the former national director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Demeter Daskalakis, and the former national center for emerging and zoonotic infectious diseases, Daniel Jernigan, Hold Flowers and React after having appeared during a demonstration, CDC house, Susan Monarez, and Georgia US, August 28, 2025.

The loss of these leaders and efforts respected to oust Monarez follow a series of measures from the Secretary of Health and Social Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – A leading vaccination skeptic – to revise federal health agencies and change the policy of immunization in the United States which includes massive layoffs, to unravel a panel of vaccination by the key government.

Kennedy has long history of making misleading statements and false declarations on the security of vaccine strokes, but in his current role, he exercises enormous power on agencies that regulate immunizations and determine both who can obtain them and which insurance plans should cover.

Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American public Health Association, said that the overhaul of CDC managers represents “defaulting leadership of Kennedy and unhappy mismanagement”, adding that he has a “blatant contempt for science and public health based on evidence”.

The agency is also in shock from the financing cuts and an August 8 attack by a shooter at its headquarters in Atlanta.

Some health policy experts have said that Leadership Exodus could further erode public confidence in an agency that is responsible for detecting disease epidemics and state and local health services if necessary.

“It must be seen in addition to a series of ways in which the CDC has been weakened and undermined, perhaps irreversibly,” CNBC Lawrence Gostin, professor of public health at the University of Georgetown, told CNBC.

“Throughout these years, the CDC has been independent and the jewel of the crown of American science. It is literally in ruins while we are talking,,” he said. “It is almost the definition of politics undergoing science.”

The main officials highlight the concerns of vaccines

Daskalakis was one of the officials explicitly emphasizing the concerns about the opinions held by Kennedy and his staff, who, according to him, challenged his ability to continue his role to the agency.

“I am unable to serve in an environment that treats the CDC as a tool to generate policies and materials that do not reflect scientific reality and are designed to injure rather than to improve public health,” said Daskalakis in his letter of resignation, which was published on X.

He said recent CDC changes in the vaccination calendar of adults and children “threaten the lives of the youngest Americans and hinders”.

High rank members of the centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), dressed in uniform, praised the former chief medicine of the CDC Debra Houry, the former national center for vaccination and respiratory diseases, Demeter Daskalakis, and the former national center for the emerging house and the director of infectious zonotic diseases, Daniel Jernigan, was awarded to the White house at the White CDC Direct Georgie, United States, August 28, 2025.

In May, Kennedy said that the CDC had removed the coid vaccines from the list of recommended plans for healthy women and children. Advice updated a few days later said that “could” be given to these groups.

Daskalakis said that data analyzes that supported the change have “never been shared with the CDC despite my respectful requests for HHS and other leadership”. He also said that the HHS distributed a “frequently asked” question “document to support Kennedy’s decision without contribution from CDC experts, and that he quoted studies” which did not support the conclusions that have been attributed to these authors “.

On Wednesday, Food and Drug Administration approved the last cycle of Cèvres vaccines only for those who are more at risk of serious illness, marking another change of policy around these blows since the start of the pandemic.

The actions of Covid Vaccine Makers plunged Thursday. Modern the action has dropped by more than 3%, while the actions of Pfizer fell around 2%.

These companies and other drug manufacturers are preparing for changes to vaccines and public health policy since Trump appointed Kennedy for the first time as his choice to direct the HHS in November. The reshuffle of CDC leadership only adds uncertainty in the pharmaceutical industry, which is also struggling with Trump pricing policies.

Kennedy tried to distant himself from his previous opinions on vaccines and other health policies during his Senate confirmation audiences in January, saying that he is not “anti-vaccine” and would not make people “difficult or discourage people from taking” routine plans for measles and polio.

But some of Kennedy’s recent efforts seem to reflect his vaccination critical opinions. For example, Kennedy in August argued that mRNA vaccines – the technology used in the counted plans – are ineffective and recommended for the development of other JABs which use other “safer” platforms.

Years of research support the effectiveness of COVVIV mRNA vaccines, and technology is now approved for use in shots against the syncytial respiratory virus.

Public health threat

Former Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases Demetre Daskalakis, next to the former national center for emerging and zoonotic media, director of infectious diseases Daniel Jernigan, spoke to the media during a demonstration, one day after the director of the White House dismissed Susan Monarez and several senior officials.

As changes cross the CDC, concerns about a threat to public health and the protocol increases.

Daskalakis criticized the means by which HHS and other CDC leaders have communicated major policy changes. For example, Kennedy has announced that he was shooting the entire consultative committee for vaccination practices – a panel of CDC vaccine advisers – via a post and loss “rather than direct communication with these precious experts,” said Daskalakis.

He said he believed that there would be an opportunity to have Kennedy informed about key subjects such as measles, avian flu and the approach of the respiratory virus season. But Daskalakis said seven months after the start of the new administration, no CDC expert in its center had informed Kennedy.

“I do not know who listens to the secretary, but it is certainly not for us,” he said. “Outdoor organizations unsuitable and in conflict seem to be the sources that HHS uses on the science of CDC gold standards and other renowned sources.”

Debra Houry, former leader of disease control and disease control centers (CDC), followed by the Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, the Director of Infectious Diseases of the National Center for Imunization and Respirator August 28, 2025.

Dr. Debra Houry, who also resigned on Wednesday from his post as a head doctor of the CDC, also said that senior leaders “had never been able to inform the secretary” about any of the questions with whom the agency deals.

“CDC scientists are first-rate and excellent,” she told MSNBC in an interview. “What we would have preferred was to have more interactions with the secretary.”

Houry has added that “in recent months, things at the CDC have been really difficult when it comes to having scientific and data decisions.”

As long -standing experts leave the CDC, the threat of infectious diseases increases. While cases of measles turn again in the United States, the bird flu spreads into livestock. The first human case of the “New World Screworm” flesh eater parasite was detected in the country.

Departures could “make our public health less guaranteed,” said Benjamin de l’Emerican Public Health Association.

He said that the disruption of managers also raises concerns concerning the country’s ability to detect and respond to emerging spread of infectious disease because the CDC is the “glue that holds” individual doctors and local and local health services.

“I fear that we do not know it in time and that we will continue this disease much longer than we should,” said Benjamin.

Benjamin said he had “little confidence” that the Trump administration will find someone “very competent” with a relevant experience to replace Monarez.

“He obviously has enormous implications for the health and well-being of the public, and enormous implications around the finances of our nation,” he said. “Prevention and well-being allows us to save money, and public health is the best purchase.”
