China condemns us for the reference to Taiwan; Washington calls him update “routine”

Taipei, Taiwan – China urged the United States on Monday to “correct its errors” after deleting the wording on a website of the State Department declaring that it had not supported the independence of Taiwan. The United States has pushed the change as an update.

The last of the State Department “information sheetFor Taiwan, an autonomous island claimed by China, included the expression “we do not support the independence of Taiwan”, but that was abandoned on Thursday.

The State Department has also changed a passage in the information sheet to suggest broader support for Taiwan’s inclusion in international organizations, deleting the words “when the State is not a requirement”.

He added that the Taiwan dispute with China should be resolved “without coercion, in an acceptable way for people on both sides of the Strait”.

“As is the routine, the information sheet has been updated to inform the general public of our unofficial relationship with Taiwan,” said his spokesperson, quoted by the Reuters news agency.

The spokesperson added that the United States had remained attached to its “China policy”, which recognizes the position of China that there is only one Chinese government and “preserve peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait ”.

But the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Guo Jiakun, said that the revisions were a “big step back” which “sends a seriously bad message to the separatist forces of Taiwan’s independence”.

“The US State Department has updated its information sheet on relations with Taiwan and seriously supported its position on issues related to Taiwan. His move seriously violated the One-China principle, “Guo told a regular briefing in Beijing.

“This is another example of obstinate membership in the United States to erroneous policy” to use Taiwan to remove China “. We urge the American part to immediately rectify his mistakes, “said Guo.

Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, operates as an autonomous democracy, but is only officially recognized by a small number of countries.

However, he maintains unofficial diplomatic relations with a large part of the international community, including the United States

Although Taipei works as a de facto independent state, he has never officially declared his independence from Beijing, who warned that such a declaration would trigger military action.

Under the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, the United States is determined to help Taiwan to defend itself, but it has long maintained a policy of “strategic ambiguity” on the question of whether it would intervene militarily to protect Taiwan in case Chinese attack.

Even subtle changes in the way US officials refer to Taiwan are closely monitored by Beijing and Taipei.

‘Message’ to China

Chen Fang-Yu, assistant professor in the Taiwan University of Political Science, said that he thought that the benchmark change was a message from the United States to China that US-Taiwa-Taiwa relations were determined by Washington and not Beijing.

“Although the presence or absence of this sentence in the statements of the State Department is not essential in itself, its suppression is important because China has long used the position of propaganda of the Clinton era”, does not support Taiwan’s independence for his propaganda, “said Chen, referring to former American president Bill Clinton.

In 1998, Clinton explicitly declared a policy of “three no”: no support for the independence of Taiwan, without recognition of “two Chinas” or “a China, a Taiwan” and no support for the membership of Taiwan to international organizations requiring a state of state.

“Now that the sentence has disappeared, China can no longer handle it for its story,” added Chen.

On Sunday, the Taiwan foreign ministry welcomed the “positive and friendly” update of the State Department as a sign of the “Taiwan-US Taiwan-US partnership.

The Taiwanese Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lin Chia-Lung, also thanked the United States for his “position of support and positive position on US-Taiwan relations” and “commitment to peace and stability in the Strait From Taiwan, the economic partnership, trade and technology of Taiwan-US and the Taiwan and Taiwan international space. “”

Japan also makes a change of taiwan

Furthermore, Japan, one of the nearest American allies of Asia, said that this would allow Taiwanese citizens to list their nationality or their region of origin as “Taiwan” instead of “China” in the household registers in May.

After Japan has broken diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1972, Taiwanese and Chinese were classified under “China” because Japan at the time rejected both “People’s Republic of China” – the official name of the China – and the “Republic of China”, for political reasons.

According to the new rule, however, Japan will use “nationality / region” instead of country names, aligning with its residence certificates and cards, and it will allow individuals to change in “Taiwan”.

Although foreigners are generally not included in household inscriptions unless they naturalize or are adopted, their nationality is recorded if they follow a Japanese citizen. The change allows the Taiwanese spouses of Japanese to have “Taiwan” lists in official archives.

The Taiwanese people have long urged the Japanese government to allow Taiwan to be registered, stressing the importance of preserving their identity. According to the Interior Ministry of Taiwan, up to 1,000 Taiwanese marry Japanese citizens each year.

In response, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman urged Japan to maintain the “One China” principle.

“Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory, and people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are all Chinese,” said Guo.

“We urge Japan to maintain the principle” One China “and the mind of the four main Chinese-Japanese political documents, refrain from making small movements about Taiwan’s question and avoiding sending contradictory signals and wrong, “referring to agreements that shape diplomatic relations between Beijing and Tokyo, including the 1972 joint press release, which established diplomatic links, Japan recognizing the People’s Republic of China as the only legal government in China.
