DETROIT – General engines on Thursday revealed its 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck lineup with new V-8 engine options and redesigned interior and exterior styling.

GMC’s new trucks are critical to the automaker’s sales and profits, particularly the highly profitable Denali luxury models and AT4 off-road models that account for about half of the vehicle’s current sales, according to GM. These models feature unique parts, accessories and equipment to increase the company’s prices and profits.

GM announced Thursday that it is narrowing its model lineup for the next-generation Sierra to the Pro, Elevation, AT4, AT4X, Denali and Denali Ultimate models. It removes the mid-level SLE and SLT trims, which currently start at around $51,500 and $57,900, respectively.

GM said pricing details as well as performance specifications would be released closer to the vehicles going on sale later this year. Starting prices for the current Sierra 1500 lineup range from about $41,000 for an entry-level Pro to more than $86,000 for a Denali Ultimate.

“With the next-generation Sierra 1500, we bring together a new generation of small-block V8 power, precise off-road capability and our most immersive cabin experience yet,” Michael MacPhee, vice president of GM’s GMC and Buick brands, said in a statement. “The next-generation Sierra is the truck all others will be measured against.”

The new trucks come a week after the Detroit automaker revealed updates to its Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup trucks, which are the mechanical siblings of the GMC models.

Most notably, GMC pickups are styled very differently from their Chevrolet brethren, including taking styling cues from the brand’s all-electric Sierra pickup and featuring a new interior.

The interior cabin features more storage, a sliding center console and a folding table or work surface, all made possible by moving the shift lever from the center console to behind the steering wheel. It also has new technology and more than 60 inches of available screens, including an 11.5-inch passenger-side screen that includes multimedia and entertainment features.

Other important changes are found under the hood. Like Silverado models, GMC pickup trucks will feature a new generation of the automaker’s small-block V8 gasoline engines, available in 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter options.

In addition to V-8 engines, GMC trucks will offer two six-cylinder engines, including a GM-exclusive diesel variant.

GM’s U.S. sales in the first half of this year are expected to decline about 7 percent, according to Cox Automotive. The overall market is expected to see sales drop about 3%, Cox said Wednesday.

GM reported that its first-quarter sales were down 9.7% from a year earlier, with the GMC brand close to the mark. Sales of the Sierra 1500 were down about 2 percent, to nearly 51,900 units, while larger, heavier models were down about 8 percent, to about 24,500 units. Sales of the electric Sierra increased 3%, but remained below 1,300 units.

Correction: This article has been updated to correct that in addition to V-8 engines, GMC Sierra 1500 trucks will offer two six-cylinder engines, including a GM-exclusive diesel variant. A previous version poorly described the options.
