President Donald Trump is set to release a fiscal 2027 budget plan Friday that will frame his party’s midterm election message around a massive defense buildup, financed in part by cuts to domestic agencies.
A government vision that directs taxpayer dollars to the Pentagon in the midst of an unpopular war in Iran poses a political risk for the White House, especially amid soaring gasoline prices. Trump may also face resistance within his own party over planned budget cuts to health and science agencies that Congress rejected last year on a bipartisan basis.
Presidents have no budgetary power. Their budgets never become law. The presidential budget document effectively serves as a statement of policy and funding priorities.
