The Trump administration has not shown no curiosity about how the most deadly flood in a century was able to perform in the United States in 2025.
The reason why the administration is not willing to dig and investigate is to start emerging, and it is the secretary of the DHS, Kristi Noem.
CNN reported:
For example, while the cities of the center of Texas were overwhelmed in rising waters, the officials of FEMA realized that they could not pre-position the urban research and rescue teams of a network of teams parked at the regional level across the country.
In the past, FEMA would have quickly organized these teams, which are specifically trained for situations such as catastrophic floods, closer to a catastrophe area in anticipation of urgent requests, multiple sources of agencies told CNN.
But even if the Texas rescue teams ran to save lives, FEMA officials realized that they needed Noem’s approval before sending these additional assets. Noem did not authorize the deployment by the FEMA of urban research and rescue teams until Monday, more than 72 hours after the start of the floods, several sources told CNN.
Senator Ron Wyden (D-OU) reacted to the CNN report by calling Noem’s deadly incompetence on Bluesky:
Trump made Kristi Noem her DHS choice even if she had no experience in any domain of internal security. Noem’s only qualification is that she spent years as a dedicated Trump’s cheerleader.
Lives could have been potentially saved if the Senate Republicans and the Seven Democrats in the Senate who voted to confirm it (Kim, Kaine, Slotkin, Peters, Hassan, Shaheen and Fetterman) said no. Kaine and Kim have already publicly regretted their votes for Noem.
The senators of the two parties who voted for an unqualified DHS candidate also deserve the blame.
Trump will not get rid of anyone who is faithful to him.
Senator Wyden was right. It is dangerous to make Kristi Noem work, and it may have killed children in Texas.
