Actions of Costco Thursday fell Thursday, despite the warehouse club, the publication of quarterly profits and income that exceeded estimates and reporting 8% sales gains all year round.

Unlike many retailers, Costco does not provide annual prospects. However, business managers have spoken of a call for the benefits of higher challenges and costs that the prices have noted for its company

Here is how the retailer of the warehouse club did during his third tax quarter compared to what Wall Street was waiting, on the basis of a survey of LSEG analysts:

  • Profit by action: $ 4.28 against $ 4.24 expected
  • Income: $ 63.21 billion against $ 63.19 billion expected

Costco's net income for the three -month period which ended on May 11 reached $ 1.90 billion, or $ 4.28 per share, against $ 1.68 billion, or $ 3.78 a year earlier. Revenues increased from $ 58.52 billion in the previous period.

Comparable sales, a metric from the industry that eliminates unique factors such as openings and store closures, increased by 8% and sales of electronic commerce increased by almost 16% compared to the period of the previous year, to the exclusion of gas and the impact of changes in exchange.

While prices increase economic concerns and potentially consumer prices, Costco could benefit from it. An unpredictable price policy could help drive more customers to the Warehouse Club, which is known for its competitive prices and its bulk discounts, and encourage them to renew members. Its clubs also sell gases at reduced prices and grocery products, which are more regular traffic drivers even when consumers withdraw on expenses. And compared to certain other retailers, Costco has a stronger hand in price negotiations with suppliers because of its large size.

About a third of American sales in Costco are goods brought by other countries, said financial director Gary Millechip on the call for the company's profits. He said that articles imported from China represent approximately 8% of the total American sales.

Some retailers have already warned that higher prices will mean higher prices. Best purchase The CEO Coririe Barry said Thursday that the retailer had already increased the prices of consumer electronics due to prices. Cosmetics Elf beauty announced an increase in prices of its makeup last week. And Walmart Financial director John David Rainey warned earlier this month that higher prices came from the stores and the discounter website at the end of May or June.

When calling the company's profits, CEO Ron Vachris said Costco had sought means to reduce tariff costs while keeping the prices low. He said his buyers had precipitated orders to bring them to the United States before the prices. He reacted the goods of countries with higher rates in non -American markets. And it comes more articles for its private brand, Kirkland Signature, in countries or regions where items are sold.

Even with prices, he said, Costco has dropped the price of certain articles, including eggs, butter and olive oil. He said he was also trying to look at the reasons that customers could register or renew membership, such as the extension of the hours of his service stations that sell fuel at reduced prices.

Compared to other retailers, Costco sells a thinner variety of items such as having fewer different brands of peanut butter or diapers. Millerchip said that the limited approach means that Costco is a larger buyer and can work more closely with the providers on prices. He said Costco can also rotate other items if necessary.

In some cases, Costco has absorbed the differences in costs related to prices and, in other cases, it has increased prices, said Millerchip. For example, the retailer decided to hold the line on the price of pineapple and bananas in Central America and South America because they are basic items for buyers, he said.

“We estimated that it was important to really eliminate the impact for the member by working with our suppliers and finding efficiency gains and accepting that there can be an impact on the margin,” he said.

On the other hand, he said, he decided to increase the price of the flowers of Central and South America, because these are more discretionary items.

From Thursday's fence, Costco's actions have increased by around 10% so far this year. This exceeded gains less than 1% of the S&P 500 during the same period.
