
Sagaing, Myanmar – One of the oldest monasteries in Mandalay was flattened after a devastating earthquake in the center of Myanmar.
Thirty-nine were killed when the monastery of Ma Soe Yein, 117, collapsed. Twelve on -site buildings collapse.
The majority of people killed were inside a dorm in the middle of an exam.
In the city of northern Sagaing, residents say that lives have been lost due to the slow response to the earthquake.
A two -story residential convent in the city collapsed, killing 14 nuns and injured many others.
“There are 54 teachers in this school. 14 died. 40 are still alive, said Daw Thinzari, teacher assistant, in an interview with Radio Free Asia.
“Of the 40, three are injured. One lost one leg, another was injured. The elder receives treatment at the General Hospital of Yangon. ”
Sagaing residents explained how they did what they could to help following the earthquake.
San San Wai smothered by saying: “I gave them food and water and everything they needed with all my love and kindness.”
Another resident told RFA: “If the soldiers had reacted, we could have saved many lives.”
