Buyers will probably pay more for coffee, bananas, vanilla and hygienic paper in the coming weeks while the new prices of the Trump administration come into force.

The United States plans to raise tariff rates on goods imported from more than 180 countries and territories in the hope of bringing jobs to the United States. However, some “critical” ingredients and materials found in food, drinks and products used daily by American consumers are not available at the national level, according to the Consumer Brands Association, a commercial group of the industry that represents Coca-Cola,, Procter & Gamble,, Target and other consumption giants.

“However, well-intentioned, the success of President America FIRST’s trade policy, must recognize American companies that already do it in the right way but depend on imports for specific ingredients and inputs that cannot come at national level,” said Tom Madecki, vice-president of the resilience of the ACB supply chain, in a press release. “The reciprocal prices that do not reflect the problems of availability of ingredients and inputs will inevitably increase costs, will limit access to consumers to affordable products and involuntarily harm the emblematic American manufacturers.”

On CNBC “Squawk Box” Thursday morning, trade secretary Howard Lunick pushed the idea that countries could gain exemptions for specific goods. But the ABC is looking for exemptions for key ingredients and slapped materials with prices to maintain the downward prices of its members and their customers.

On the part, the American climate limits the production of certain staples of the American diet, such as coffee, cocoa and tropical fruits, according to the ABC. The United States was the world’s largest importer in bananas in 2023, based on the observatory of economic complexity data. Almost 40% of these bananas came from Guatemala, which faces a 10% price on goods exported to the United States

Trader Joe’s has long boasted of not increasing the price of its bananas, as shown in this photo of 2014.

Spices will also become more expensive for cooks and home bakers due to climate limitations, the ABC said. For example, Madagascar represents more than three -quarters of American vanilla imports, which is already the second most expensive spice in the world. Exports from Madagascar will be subject to rates of 47%.

Actions of Spice Purveyor McCormick dropped less than 1% in the afternoon trade on Thursday. The company plans to compensate for the prices through “some very targeted price adjustments” and a larger savings program, McCormick managers said at the end of March.

In other cases, changes of several decades in the American agricultural system mean that the interior supply cannot easily meet demand.

For example, more than 90% of ground oats for food in the United States comes from Canada to be transformed into cereals, ABC said. But the area of American oats culminated over a century ago and has decreased in decades since then, according to the American department of agriculture. The domestic food system can no longer grow, store or transport oats to the scale necessary to meet demand, said ABC.

Buyers probably also find themselves paying more for non -edible basic foods. The hygienic paper, layers, lotions and shampoo could become more expensive as manufacturers pass the increased costs of wood paste, bamboo fibers, shea butter and palm oil, according to ACB. For example, the United States imports most of its palm oil diet from Indonesia, which now faces a 32%task.

The markets dived Thursday in response to the price announcement. However, the actions of the consumption clip sector, which include many ABC members, have increased in the afternoon trade while investors have abandoned more risky bets for the relative safety of household necessities.

Procter & Gamble actions climbed more than 1%, while COKE shares increased by 2%. General Mills’ shares have increased by 3%.
