Donald Trump has always wanted to control media coverage. Trump wants a media that disseminates what he says without thought or critical interrogation.

On Wednesday, the White House announced that the association of White House correspondents will no longer be allowed to choose journalists in the press pool that covers Trump and the White House. These journalists will now be handmade by the White House.

In response to the announcement of the White House, the president of the National Press Club said in a press release:

The announcement of the White House today is a direct challenge to the independence of a free press in the United States. For almost a century, the journalists who make up the White House press pool assured that the American people know where their president is, which they do and what they say in real time.

In times of crisis – whether it is a national emergency or a sudden global event – independent journalists must be there to relay specific information to the American and the world. By taking control of this process, the White House undermines a crucial pillar of our democracy and opens the door to favoritism and secrecy.

The National Press Club is held with the @Whca By calling the Trump administration to maintain the tradition of an open and independent press pool.

The press pool, working weekends, holidays and often at personal costs, should never be replaced by a group of initiates sorted on the side. We urge the White House to reverse the course immediately and preserve the integrity of the press basin for the good of our democracy.

Those of the independent media tried to warn the consumer media that the famous and the attempt to please Trump did not end well for them.

Corporate media depend on access journalism. They need to access the White House, or they are largely useless.

Trump’s actions are an attack on the free press and an attack on democracy.

The consumer press will now feel the pressure to undoubtedly push Trump’s propaganda, otherwise they will lose access to the White House and the President.

Corporate Press has already shown that they could not trust, and now the Americans will have even more reasons to doubt motivations for their reports.

What does Trump think trying to choose the journalists who will cover him? Share your reflections in the comments below.
