Donald Trump really needed to use the first State of the Union address of his second term to do a hard reset. Trump just reached his lowest approval rating, at 36%.
What Trump had to say about anything else doesn’t really matter. It was the economy that caused his presidency to fail.
Earlier Tuesday, Republicans were desperately hoping that Trump would get the message and talk to the American people about affordability, but because this president thinks the economic hardship of non-wealthy people is a hoax, that’s exactly what hasn’t happened.
Americans needed to hear that Trump understood.

Instead, Donald J. Trump sent the opposite message:
Today, our border is secure. Our morale is restored, inflation is falling, incomes are increasing rapidly. The booming economy is roaring like never before.
And our enemies are afraid. Our military and police are at their highest and America is respected again, perhaps like never before.
After four years. During which millions and millions of illegal aliens have flowed across our borders without any checks or controls. We now have the strongest and most secure border in American history.

This was NOT the message Republicans expected from Trump.
In fact, it was a disaster.
Instead of sympathizing with economically struggling Americans, Trump mocked them.
The president said:
Now the same people in this House who voted for these disasters have suddenly used the word affordability, a word. They just used it. Someone gave it to them, knowing full well that they were behind and behind the price increases that all our citizens had to endure. You caused this problem. You caused this problem.
They knew their statements were a lie. They knew it. They knew their statements were a dirty, rotten lie. Their policies created high prices. Our policies are quickly putting an end to it. We’re doing really well. These prices are plummeting.
The price of eggs has fallen by 60%. Madam Secretary, thank you. The cost of chicken, butter, fruit, hotels, automobiles. The rent is now less than one. I took office a lot in advance, and even the beef, which was very high, is starting to drop considerably. Just wait a little while. We reduce it.

Trump did not sympathize with people who are struggling to pay for their food. He condescended, blamed and apologized. This is Trump’s economy and Trump’s problem. The American people don’t believe it, and Trump has shown how completely out of touch with reality he is.
