Trump’s threats and tariffs on Canada have garnered attention from the American perspective, but what do our traditionally friendly and supportive northern neighbors think of Trump and his administration’s treatment of them?
A new Politico poll provides some answers:
Slight majorities in all three European countries surveyed chose Russia, which upended the world order almost four years ago with its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, as the biggest threat: Germany (56%), France (55%) and the United Kingdom (53%).
Canadians are also worried about what’s happening next door.
Nearly half of Canadians point the finger at the United States, a 19-point lead over Russia, which comes in second (29%). A large majority of Canadians (43 percent) view the United States as “mostly a threat” to global stability. 34% say Americans are “sometimes a force for stability, sometimes a threat.”
67% of Canadians believe that Trump actively seeks conflict with other countries, and 78% of them believe that Trump has weakened relations between the United States and Canada. Of these 78%, 29% believe that relations between the United States and Canada will not recover after Trump leaves office.
