Mike Johnson could toast before midterms as House Republicans drop like flies

Here at PoliticusUSA, we’ve discussed the possibility that House Republicans could lose their majority before the midterm elections due to resignations, retirements, unexpected members falling ill or dying. Democrats will gain two seats in the House. The first will be elected in a special election in a district in Houston, Texas, in late January. The second seat is current Governor Sherrill’s former New Jersey seat and will be filled in a special election in April.

Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s remaining term will not be filled until Georgia’s March 10 special election.

Republicans currently have exactly 218 votes in the House. 216 votes are currently needed to pass a law. With a House Republican absent due to a car accident, the Republican margin for error is as close to zero as possible without losing the majority.

During his weekly press conference, President Mike Johnson was asked about the possibility of losing the House majority before the midterms, and he responded:

We do this, it’s a very simple thing, okay?

This is not the insight of President Johnson nor necessarily the teamwork of the Republican Conference. That’s because I’m going to be very honest with you. I am a person of deep faith and we trust in God. It is our national motto. Um, and we act accordingly. I posted a slide this morning at the end of the talk, and it’s one of my favorites that I have on my phone and I’m sharing it with everyone, and it’s a picture of the parting of the Red Sea.
