The House Republicans offered a seven -week CR which would keep the government open until November 21 and contain funding for additional security for legislators, but did nothing to restore Obamacare’s subsidies or replace planned Medicaid cuts.
Johnson plans to vote in the House on Friday on his CR.
The absence of anything in the CR to approach health care meant that the minority head of the Hakeem Jeffries room and the head of the Senate minority, Chuck Schumer, rejected him.
Schumer and Jeffries said in a joint press release:
The House Republican Expenditure Bill does not meet the needs of the American people and does nothing to stop the crisis of imminent health care. At a time when families are already pressed by higher costs, the Republicans refuse to prevent Americans from facing two -digit hikes in their health insurance premiums.
By refusing to work with the Democrats, the Republicans direct our country directly towards a closure. President Trump called the play last week when he told Congress Republicans to blur a partisan bill in the throat of the American people without democratic support.
Instead of governing, the Republicans again take orders from Donald Trump, injuring the American people and recklessly walking our nation on the verge of closure.
Schumer and Jeffries continue to warn the Republicans than they negotiate with the Democrats, the government will close. Trump rejected the idea of negotiating with the Democrats, but he does not seem to understand or worry that the Senate needs democratic votes to pass anything.
Trump leads Republicans directly into a closure. Chuck Schumer’s strategy has changed, and it would be on the firm outfit and allowing the Republicans to close the government.
If the government stops, everything will be on the Republicans. The GOP controls the three branches of the government. It is up to them to keep the government open and obtain the necessary democratic support that they need to do so.
