The White House thinks that the current debate for the financing of the government can be won as the last was in March. They believe that nothing has changed, and they can adopt a bill to keep the government open by putting the Democrats of the Senate against a deadline without negotiation.
The political climate has changed.
The White House does not see it, which is why Trump and his party are about to get on the rake and spoil himself in front with a government closure.
Punchbowl News reported:
The republican management of the Chamber plans to put a field bill this week to maintain the federal government open until November 20, a strategy aimed at giving appropriators for another seven weeks to challenge a broader expenditure agreement for invoices for the 20126 financial year.
The Republicans say that the CR will be “clean” – without partisan horsemen.
But as we have pointed out, the GOP’s proposal does not include any of the Democrats’ demands. The head of the Senate minority, Chuck Schumer, and the minority head of the Hakeem Jeffries room said they could not vote for any CR, unless it includes health care provisions.
It is not clear if the Democrats demand that the Republicans are renewing improved premium subsidies for Obamacare or restoring the cups of Obbb Medicaid. On the contrary, Schumer and Jeffries simply called on the Republicans to negotiate.
People who think that Democrats should announce that they are closing the government is missing the political nuance.
By asking for negotiations, the Democrats are reasonable and deflect any GOP attempt to blame them for a closure by demonstrating that it is Trump and his party who do not want to speak.
When / if the government stops, it is the Republicans who hold the bag because they are the ruling party, and they refused to come to the table to guarantee the necessary votes to avoid a closure.
The economy is already in poor condition, and it will be even more damaged by a government closure. There are no winners in the closure itself, but if the government will stop, it will not reopen without the Republicans restoring, at least Obamacare subsidies, which the Republicans could accept to do now.
Democrats do not control the congress or the White House so that they do not criticize a closure.
Trump has the record for the longest closure of the government in history. The government closed its doors for 35 days in 2019 because it wanted funding for its border wall.
If the government stops again, it could last even longer.
