The White House responds after Canada dropped reprisals on American products

Canada eliminated many of its reprisals in the United States on Friday, marking a significant step in the relationship of the two countries.

Canada in March imposed counter-trials of 25% On a long list of American products that comply with the North American trade agreement after the United States has announced 25% of steel and aluminum tasks. In particular, Canada’s prices at 25% on American cars, steel and aluminum will remain in place for the moment, Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Friday at a press conference.

The change will come into force on September 1, added Carney, saying that it thought that Canada has the best trade agreement from all countries working with the United States

“While we are working intensely with the United States, we focus on strategic sectors,” said Carney.

A White House official told NBC News that Canada’s decision was “expected for a long time”.

“We are looking forward to continuing our discussions with Canada on commercial and national administration security problems,” said the official.

Friday’s announcement follows a telephone call between Carney and President Donald Trump, the first known appeal between the two since the missed discussions before the price limit of August 1. Reading the Thursday call from Carney’s office on Thursday to describe the conversation “productive and large -scale”, the two leaders agreeing to retrain soon.

Carney said on Friday that Trump assured him that the abolition of reprisal rates would start the negotiations between the two countries.

This decision comes when the American-mexico-Canada agreement, which Trump has negotiated during his first mandate, is expected to undergo an exam later this year.

Canada has been quick to impose its counter-targets in the United States out of 30 billion dollars in CA, or 21.7 billion US dollars, for American goods under the Minister of the time, Justin Trudeau. In July, Trump announced that it would increase Canada prices to 35% and said that the ramp-up of fentanyl and Canada’s reluctance to work with the United States had affected its decision.

A total of 43 pounds of the medication was seized on the northern border during 2024 with 58 additional pounds which have been confiscated there so far this year, according to customs and the protection of American borders.

At the time, Carney declared in an article on the social media site X that the country was determined to work alongside the United States to conclude an agreement.
