Comcast beats the profits for the first quarter despite the loss of wide -band customers

Comcast Thursday, described the changes in its broadband strategy while the company continues to lose customers in the face of increased competition.

The discussion occurred in the middle of the company’s first quarter of the company with investors. Despite customer losses, Comcast’s revenues have exceeded analysts’ expectations.

Comcast’s shares closed almost 4% on Thursday.

Here is how Comcast occurred for the period ended on March 31, compared to the estimates of the analysts interviewed by LSEG:

  • Profit by action: $ 1.09 adjusted vs 98 cents expected
  • Income: $ 29.89 billion against $ 29.77 billion expected

While national broadband income increased 1.7% to $ 6.56 billion, Comcast lost 199,000 total national strip customers, reflecting continuous pressure on the cornerstone of the cable giant. Competition has increased in recent years due to the rise of alternative home internet options, including 5G or so-called fixed wireless.

“In this intense competitive environment, we do not win the market in a manner proportionate to the strong points of our network and our connectivity,” said Comcast president Mike Cavanagh, when calling the company.

Analysts dotted Comcast managers with questions on Thursday regarding his broadband and brand mobile Xfinity, and how the company will swivel the company.

Cavanagh said that the company had identified a “disconnection” which resulted in slowed growth despite a solid wide -band network and related products. He noted that the two main opposite winds are “transparency and price predictability and the ease of doing business with us”.

During the call for the last quarter results, Comcast managers alerted investors that they are focusing on the growth of its mobile activities as a result of large -band continuous losses.

Comcast Comcast’s mobile activities, 10 years old, remained a positive point during the quarter. Unit income increased by around 16% to $ 1.12 billion, and added 323,000 lines. There are now around 8.15 million total XFINITY mobile lines.

On Thursday, CEO Brian Roberts said that the company “clearly faced certain challenges, but as you heard, with great passion”.

“The team has a feeling of emergency, energy and concentration for customer pain points to be resolved,” said Roberts. “Although it can take a little time to settle fully, our history of the success of operational execution would tell you that even if sometimes we cannot move first, once we are in motion, we do it extremely well.”

‘High competition’

On Thursday, COMCAST financial director Jason Armstrong said that the company was “in an incredibly solid position to successfully perform difficult decisions that we make in the face of high competition in certain areas”.

High speed has flowered as a growth engine for cablodistributors like Comcast while cable television activity began its decline. Comcast Thursday reported 427,000 loss of cable television customers during the first quarter.

After years of coherent growth in wide -band customers, especially during the first cowardly pandemic locking orders when many Americans used internet at home for work and school, the green shoots of competing offers have started to settle.

The key competitive force was the rise in fixed wireless offers from Verizon and T-Mobile. There was the so-called prodigy of the internet fiber, as well as 5G, an internet offer at high speed without fixed wireless.

In 2022, Comcast and Charter Communications each reported their first quarterly losses in the growth of wide -band customers.

Last September, Charter unveiled a change of strategy, which was focused on new prices, Internet speeds, the push to grow mobile and make customer service changes. The CEO, Chris Winfrey, told CNBC that the objective was to delete the long -standing negative perception around cablodistributors.

When Comcast noted the need to change strategy earlier this year, the leaders said they would follow the example of charter in these areas. Comcast recently started to introduce changes in its mobile plans and its prices, and has made a new rental.

Comcast Cable President Dave Watson said on Thursday that new offers – such as adding a mobile line for free for a year – which were introduced at the end of the first quarter have already shown advantages.

“It has resulted in an excellent quarter to start. We are driving here, and we expect continuous acceleration in the coming quarters,” he said.

Watson has also noted services for existing customers as “a central element of our strategy is innovation”.

Despite the lack of growth, the income of the large -band unit is constantly increased due to the force of average income by user or the ARPU in the jargon of the industry. Analysts wondered if it would take a blow with the change of strategy.

“What we are trying to do is really focusing on the painting of this market,” said Watson. “We can execute it tactically, surgically and do not consider it as a broad representation of our base. We think that we can always generate a healthy growth of the large -band arpu, but these initiatives will require investments, which will have an impact on our ability to increase the EBITDA in the near future. But we consider the impact as very manageable.”

For the first quarter, Comcast’s net profit fell 12.5% to $ 3.38 billion, or 89 cents per share, against $ 3.86 billion, or 97 cents per share during the same period a year earlier. Adjustment for occasional elements, including income tax fees and costs related to the value of assets, among other elements, Comcast declared a profit per share of $ 1.09.

The profits adjusted before interest, taxes, damping and damping, or EBITDA, increased by almost 2% to 9.53 billion dollars.

The company’s revenues fell slightly to $ 29.89 billion, compared to $ 30.06 billion during the same period in 2024.

Revenues have been helped by what Comcast calls its “growth companies”, including mobile, the Peacock streaming platform, business services unit, residential broadband, studios and theme parks. Comcast is turning your wallet of wired networks, including CNBC, in a transaction that should be completed this year.

Income from the media segment, which include NBCUNIVERIVERSAL, increased by around 1% to 6.44 billion dollars, and income from the film studios increased by 3% to $ 2.83 billion.

The media unit obtained a boost from Peacock, with an adjusted EBITDA for the segment up 21% to $ 1 billion driven by the streaming platform. Peacock’s revenues himself increased by 16%. The quarterly loss of streamer has shrunk at $ 215 million, against a loss of $ 639 million in the same quarter a year earlier.

Peacock had 41 million paid subscribers, beating estimates by analysts of 37.21 million for the quarter, according to Streetaccount. Peacock finished the last financial year with 36 million paid customers.

Competitors, including Disney And Discovery Warner Bros. Each have seen their streaming platforms reach profitability during recent quarters. The banners moved gears to focus on commercial models supported by advertising and repress password sharing in order to achieve profitability while Wall Street investors concentrated towards metrics rather than adding subscribers.

NBCUNIVERIVERSALE’s theme parks have dropped by 5% to around 1.88 billion dollars – caused by the decline in the attendance of guests in a quarter, LOS Angeles forest fires – weighs down the global company.

The company is preparing for the beginnings of Universal Epic Universe on May 22, which will be the first development of a major theme park in Florida in 25 years. In Thursday’s release, Comcast called the new themed park that its “most ambitious parks experience ever created” with more than 50 attractions.

In August, he will also open the universal horror launched in Las Vegas. NBCUNIVERIVESSAL also recently announced its intention to build a universal theme park and a station in the United Kingdom
