Traditionally, former presidents stay away from day-to-day politics. They may campaign for their party in an election year, but they don’t stand aside and criticize.
Trump broke that tradition by refusing to step down and constantly criticizing the Biden administration.
The country needed someone with credibility and status to put these pieces together and explain that what Trump is doing is not normal and is bad for the country.
During his interview with Barack Obama, Stephen Colbert asked the former president what powers he thinks a president should not have.
Obama responded: “I followed some of them even though they weren’t laws, and I want us…we have to do some work to get back to that basic standard, and we probably now need to codify it. The White House should not be able to order the attorney general to prosecute anyone the president wants to prosecute.”
Colbert emphasized that the DOJ is under the executive branch, and Obama continued: “The standard is that it is independent. The idea is that the attorney general is the people’s lawyer. He is not the president’s consigliere.”
