Government funding expires at the end of January. DHS must pass a new budget before then or it will run out of money.
After the filming of Renée Good, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem signed an illegal order stating that any member of Congress must provide one week’s notice before they can visit an ICE facility.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) posted on Bluesky that Noem’s action is one of the reasons Congress needs to rein in ICE:
Members of Congress have a clear and stated legal right under the current DHS funding bill to be allowed access to these facilities without this notice.
So if Congress wants to continue funding DHS, there must be meaningful restrictions to curb this blatant lawlessness.
Senator Murphy proposes requiring arrest warrants, banning ICE from wearing masks, and limiting the use of firearms for any civil action against ICE.
Murphy was asked on NBC’s Meet The Press whether any of these reforms could pass the Senate, and his response revealed that Democrats have key leverage over Trump, Republicans and ICE.
