
Trump won 55% of the Hispanic vote in Texas, and when Republicans decided to try to save their majority in the House of Representatives through gerrymandering, they counted on Texas and Hispanics voting for Trump in 2024.
When Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed the new map, he said, “Four of the five districts we’re going to create are predominantly Hispanic districts. Democrats think they have a vested interest in Hispanic or black voters. They’re now learning the hard way how those voters support Republicans.”

The Hispanic shift toward the Republican Party has been a talking point among national Republicans throughout 2025. The shift of black voters and younger voters toward the Republicans has proven to be a 2024 mirage, as those groups have returned Trump to his usual low approval ratings, but the Republican Party has told anyone who will listen that Hispanics have moved in their direction and that they think this will continue.
The idea is absurd at first glance. Trump has deployed ICE to terrorize Hispanics in the United States since taking office. Trump assured Hispanics that he would only deport criminals, but it appears that Trump’s definition of criminal is pretty much anyone with brown skin.
The result created a problem for Trump and for the key part of the Republican gerrymander strategy.
